Having taught at a Catholic school, I have a strong work ethic, I also am interested in meeting the student in his or her own needs. I work best with middle school to high school kids (6-12) and college students.

WRITING: True writers know that they always need to improve their writing. The question is, do you or your student need my help? I have a simple approach that integrates the classics to show you the three basic problems in all writing and give you methods for fixing them. For the past two years, I have taught grammar and writing to 7th graders, as well as advanced composition and public speaking to 12th graders. I see results with all my students.

MATH: I also have taught geometry and would be able to tutor in that subject as well. I work very well with numbers, and scored near the 90th percentile in GRE math.

RELIGION: Catholic school student? I could help in any and all Catholic subjects--Scripture, Church history, morality, ethics, philosophy, social justice, lives of the saints, etc.

Classes I have taught directly or will be teaching next year include writing: 7th grammar/writing, 12th journalism, 12th advanced composition/speech; math: geometry; religion: 6th grade religion, 10th grade Sacred Scripture, 12th grade morality/apologetics, 11th social justice, sacraments, lives of the saints/Church history; foreign language: New Testament Greek.

My experience includes 6 years working at the Roanoke Times (3 as an editorial assistant, 3 years as a copy editor, correcting reporters' mistakes, writing headlines, and designing front pages); 2 years as public relations writer at Franciscan University of Steubenville; teaching RCIA to college students during Master's studies; and 2 additional years teaching multiple subjects above at small K-12. I am in my second year teaching at JSerra Catholic (Orange County); I'm an adjunct professor JP Catholic University teaching Biblical Greek I and II and classical rhetoric (San Diego, beginning June 2011)

Vocabulary

I can teach you how to expand your vocabulary rapidly through understanding some morphological principles of the English language and the languages from which it is derived.

Grammar

I have taught grammar in middle school (7th grade grammar/writing), high school (integrated into a class on advanced composition), and in college (integrated into my Biblical Greek classes).

Geometry

I taught geometry to a mix of 9th and 10th students. Several students came for personal tutoring. I have tutored through Wyzant in this subject.

Writing

I am a prolific writer, have taught writing in the classroom (7th grade, 12th grade, college freshmen and sophomores), and have tutored through Wyzant in this subject with strong results.

Psychology

I received my B.A. in psychology and would be glad to help you understand the history of psychology, research methods, etc.

SAT Math

I am a former geometry teacher, with strong performance on GRE math section. I could help not only with the difficult mathematical concepts but also with preparing for a standardized test in math.

GRE

My own GRE scores put me in or near the 90th percentile in verbal, quantitative, and writing. This was following a weak initial test. What did I do differently? Let me help you, too.

Proofreading

I am a former copy editor and have worked in the publication of several books. I will not only catch your mistakes, but I will teach you how to catch them and how not to rely solely on spellchecker.

SAT Writing

My GRE scores were in the 90th percentile in writing. I have also taught writing in the classroom (see my "writing" subject description). I can teach you how to prepare for and how to execute a masterfully crafted writing sample that will yield results that are appealing to the types of colleges you are interested in.

Philosophy

I have integrated philosophical principles into nearly every class I've taught, and have taught Introduction to Philosophy to high school seniors.

Spelling

Through my language studies (particularly Latin, Greek, and German) and knowledge of language development, I could take a morphological approach that focuses on word origins and roots. I guarantee you will improve your spelling.

Religion

I have taught the Catholic religion to middle and high school students, ranging as young as 6th graders to high school seniors. I have also taught RCIA on the college level and intend on pursuing doctoral studies in theology. Not only am I more than capable of tutoring any middle or high school religion class, but I also teach these subjects with passion and effectiveness.

Chess

I was vice president of my chess club in college, and admittedly spent way too much time playing chess on Yahoo. Though by no means am I an expert, I could teach beginners and raise them to intermediate status.

Adobe Photoshop

I have been trained in Photoshop since 2005, when working for a daily newspaper as a copy editor. I taught high school seniors to use the program for our journalism class and work well with introductory users.

Bible Studies

I am knowledgeable in Biblical Greek and am learning Biblical Hebrew. Fully equipped with Logos Bible Software, I walk you through exegesis of the New Testament and Septuagint (LXX) especially. Mystified by the Letter to the Hebrews? I took a class with a priest from the Pontifical Biblical Institute on this letter. I teach from a Catholic perspective, and freely incorporate the commentaries on Sacred Scripture by the Church Fathers.

Greek

I am teaching New Testament Greek I and II at John Paul the Great Catholic University in San Diego for Summer 2011 and Fall 2011 terms. I am a self-learner and have been a student of the language for years following initial tutoring sessions. I will not only be able to tutor the language, but set others on a path to self-learning. (Please note that this is Koine Greek, not Attic or modern Greek.)

Public Speaking

I have taught public speaking for the past two years in a high school setting. I have helped others confront fears and deliver commencement speeches. Students learn the essentials of coming up with ideas, organizing thoughts, speaking them eloquently, memorizing strategies, and delivery techniques. Students still contact me to bounce their ideas for their "amplifications" off me.

Adobe InDesign

I have experience in Adobe InDesign program, using CS3 and the CS5 upgrade. I myself have performed typesets for book publication and have trained high school seniors to use this program successfully (and enthusiastically) as well.

Logic

I taught logic as propaedeutic in my introduction to philosophy course. It was my favorite class in my undergraduate studies and I have done extensive reading in the topic. As the art of reasoning, logic has been integral to each class I have taught. This subject comes alive with syllogisms, fallacies, enthymemes, and more! Learn about exciting things such as straw men, red herrings, and the square of opposition! We'll have fun.

Classics

I have taught classical rhetoric to freshmen and sophomores at John Paul the Great Catholic University and grammar and logic in middle and high school settings. I would be glad to help you navigate through Cicero, Quintilian, Aristotle, Plato, and others, in their original languages or in English.
