ESL/ESOL

As a high school English teacher who teaches ESL/ESOL students throughout the school day, I understand the need for scaffolded learning and thorough review. For English Language Learners, there must be a systematic learning process that includes development of vocabulary knowledge, content review and verbal/written practice.

Study Skills

Study Skills starts with an ability to organize yourself and your time. To do this, one must be prepared to take a holistic approach to studying from taking notes to reviewing notes to answering prep questions.

With a background in teaching AVID, a four-year high school program that focuses on study skills students can use in preparation for college, I've come across many elements of success that separate a good student from a bad student.

Specifically, good students set short-term and long-term achievement goals. Good students also keep an organized notebook and planner that is separated into different subjects.

Along with these basic organizational elements, students need to learn how to take proper Cornell Notes, and develop test preparation skills to improve their educational standing.

To accomplish these things, a student must manage his or her time well, be prepared to spend time studying and be prepared to review certain subjects in which the learning has not fully been completed.
