As a former instructor at Iowa State University, the majority of my students in my courses were junior and seniors. In my capacity as their fieldwork and internship supervisor, often the topic of career development would be discussed. The student's major of Child Life Therapy is one of practical skills and hands-on application of those skills within pediatric health care environments. I would provide guidance, resources and a sounding board for the students exploring various avenues for their new career development paths. Additionally, as an internship supervisor at several regional hospitals, one of the projects which my interns completed was mock interviewing and job exploration strategies. Although the majority of my professional 20-plus years of management experience is within the healthcare field, there are many transferable skills which relate to career development in many sectors of work today.
My primary professional experience in healthcare was with the pediatric population, ages 2-18 yrs. old. In terms of teaching, I prepared various lessons were developmentally based to help each child master the information about impending medical, surgical or new diagnosis information. The preparation sessions utilized a variety of teaching modalities including: medical play, reverse simulations, special projects, interactive computer sessions as well as opportunities to view the medical equipment and participate in pre-operative surgery tours. Although the "academics" were geared toward medical situations, my background in child development is applicable beyound the hospital environment. I would anticipate receiving background academic information from the parents in order to preprare the appropriate lessons plans and teaching approach for each prospective elementary student that I have an opportunity to tutor.
The computer is an awesome machine but can be very daunting given the power of rapid technology. Most individuals need somewhat of a library approach towards developing their skills in topic seaching, accessing appropriate resources, guidance in developing online accounts, etc. I would approach a general computer request from the student's list of challenges and tailor the tutoring towards computer skill development through drills, reading materials, online resources, introductory programming, etc. I recently completed a college level course in programming and general computer in which I earned a B+ grade. The materials used in the class are applicable to general computer skill developmemt and learning, which I would integrate into tutoring sessions.
The art of handwriting begins with an assessment of proper grip and positioning of the pencil. Many students need practice and some exercises to strengthen their writing grasp. Additionally, I have used supplemental finger placement pencil grips to help students properly space and hold their hand steady while learning to write. The writing tracing guides in both upper and lower case are also useful in guiding the writing strokes in the correct direction as well as an instant feedback onto grade specific ruled paper. The students gain confidence, correct and sturdy writing lessons and enjoy seeing their instant success in legible writing samples. Patience and encouragement provides optimal positive results for the new writers.
The Praxis computerized exams are a series of three tests covering the subjects of: reading, writing and mathematics. The exams are standardized and thus it is a similair testing scenario to the SAT's and ACT's. I have completed the Praxis exams and based on my scores, the sections that I would provide tutoring tips and skill development would be for the reading and writing exams. The Praxis reading test measures a student's ability to analyze and understand written information based on various passages displayed in the exam. The Praxis writing test is designed for student's ability to compose a essay and series of questions focusing upon the use of standard English.
My experience in successfully completing the Praxis exams included: vocabulary skill drills, writing draft essays and completing mock exams at the kitchen table. I utilized several of the standard exam preparation books. My tutoring techniques would include providing a variety of techniques to improve reading comprehension, enhancing personal vocabulary, selection of topics for writing essays and practicing these skills in mock testing environments. Preparation is certainly key for any standardized test and I would support and encourage your test taking skills for success with the Praxis exams.
Proofreading is an important element in the composition of various papers including: creative, research, essay, personal statements within applications and conference presentations. All of these items require a close examination of the structure within the author's writing. Most of my students have followed APA style manuals and thus the proofreading may be focused on those elements. I utilize the same elements of style as the student has been assigned while proofreading papers. The results from collaborating with each student and their proofreading request has yielded high grades.
Sewing skills are often needed during the inventory of closet items when you discover that your favorite piece of clothing is in need of mending. Whether it's a button loop addition or following a pattern to create a decorative accessory or actual piece of clothing, I would be able to guide you through the sewing process. I have used my own sewing machine for clothing alterations and completion of various sewing patterns.
Additionally, I have a sewing resource book which provides great descriptions as well as pictorial guides for some of the more advanced sewing techniques. Often too, it's a matter of coordinating your familiarity with the mechanics of the actual sewing machine while guiding material through the stitch guide plates.
My tutoring experience with SOL exams has included preparing students for the grade levels, 3, 5, & 6. I utilize the standardized tests as reference and practice, along with study and test taking skills which are researched based methods. The incorrect answers are reviewed and discussed for retention and correction. Additional informational support provided by my contacts within the school systems as needed.
The heading of special needs can encompass an array of unique situations which are challenges to students. In terms of preparing for a specific exam or refreshing your comprehension of a particular portion of a subject which has been troublesome for you to attain your best grade. My approach would be to assess the material, subject matter and tackle the areas which are most concerning or challenging to you. I think that often the opportunity to discuss with a new person in detail the issues that are facing your for a particular subject is am excellent foundation for preparing and paving the way to a bright future. I would draw upon my years of experience from teaching elementary through college age students to help you in your special needs tutoring requests.
Study Skills are as unique as the individual student trying to retain the concepts and application of particular school subjects. It's important to note that your own study skills may work well for you and not always for your classmates. The need to assess and find your own approach to studying is key. Some students are visual learners while others enjoy and retain information from taking notes, while other may be a combination of two types if studying. By reviewing the approaches used in the past and capturing techniques that may indeed foster your recall of school subjects as well as discussing your approach to studying, together a plan for study skills can be designed with your needs in mind. I look forward to assisting in designing a study skill plan for you.
I am an avid crossword puzzle fan as well as scrabble player. Additionally, my background includes many years of healthcare conference presentations, committee chairmanships and the daily use of rich vocabulary. Also, I encourage many students to actively use their dictionary or thesaurus while writing and preparing presentations so that their vocabulary is effective.
My experience in Web Design includes design work for 2 web sites. In both work environments, I assisted with either on-line web ads and submission of content features to an existing website. My favorite products include the Macromedia Web Design suites and resources from printed publications. I also attended several of the FlashForward conferences. Also, prior to our community recreation center being built, I assisted with the community advocacy group working with local Virginia County officials to promote the progress of construction within a web page.
My education throughout college at the undergraduate and graduate school levels has included multiple projects, assignments, presentations and research studies which included a variety of writing styles. Additionally, I have presented topics at invited professional healthcare conferences for which I submitted a written summation of the anticipated conference topic. All of my conference summations were approved for presentation. I have successfully tutored students from elementary, middle school, high school, college and graduate level students with a variety of writing assignments. I enjoy tutoring in this subject and have received good feedback from past students with regards to their writing challenges.
