Anyone can learn to write clearly and effectively. Writing
is not rocket science
but a process of drafting and revision. Writing is personal. My instruction doesn't follow the current educational theories and practices. But, every semester I teach confirms that they are effective. More than that, my students improve their writing, reading
, and critical thinking skills. I hold an Master of Fine Arts degree in Poetry. This education and my writing experience combine with my teaching experience to give me a unique insight into the writing process.
I've adapted my skills to the methods and techniques taught by Richard Marius, the former director of Harvard's Expository Writing program. The introduction to his manual, A Writer's Companion, explains that this course is "the only course required of all Harvard undergraduates." This instruction produces immediate results.
Marius focuses on the writing process of drafting and revision. He stresses the use of conventional English grammar
, syntax, and vocabulary
. These fundamental elements help a writer to organize information in a logical, concise, and clear style. As novice writers develop these skills, they also develop their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills—their writer's voice.
Writing in any genre is personal. The writing process is a process of discovery — a process of critical thinking that reveals YOUR unique understanding and perspective of a subject. It's a process that enables us expresses our insights clearly and effectively. And, through this process, we discover that we're always becoming better writers.
