Anyone can learn to write clearly and effectively. Writing is not rocket science but a process of drafting and revision. Writing is personal. My instruction doesn't follow the current educational theories and practices. But, every semester I teach confirms that they are effective. More than that, my students improve their writing, reading, and critical thinking skills. I hold an Master of Fine Arts degree in Poetry. This education and my writing experience combine with my teaching experience to give me a unique insight into the writing process.

I've adapted my skills to the methods and techniques taught by Richard Marius, the former director of Harvard's Expository Writing program. The introduction to his manual, A Writer's Companion, explains that this course is "the only course required of all Harvard undergraduates." This instruction produces immediate results.

Marius focuses on the writing process of drafting and revision. He stresses the use of conventional English grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. These fundamental elements help a writer to organize information in a logical, concise, and clear style. As novice writers develop these skills, they also develop their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills—their writer's voice.

Writing in any genre is personal. The writing process is a process of discovery — a process of critical thinking that reveals YOUR unique understanding and perspective of a subject. It's a process that enables us expresses our insights clearly and effectively. And, through this process, we discover that we're always becoming better writers.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I approach the teaching of English from a writer's perspective. My advanced studies in creative writing helped me develop a view of literature and writing that emphasizes how we write and how understanding the form and structure of literature communicates as much of the author's mind as the content of the narrative.

The same principle applies to writing in any form. An understanding of how a writer can organize their thoughts leads the writer to discover new insights into the topic, and the ability to clearly and effectively communicate those insights to the reader.

Writing

I approach writing as a process of discovery. By grappling with the basics of grammar and diction and fitting those thoughts into words, the writer discovers how to clearly express the thought. At the same time, the writer discovers a clearer understanding of their thoughts.

The drafting process applies to all genres and enables the writer to discover how to fit the words into the poem, the short story, the essay, the novel…
