I recently graduated with high honors from UCSC with a degree in English literature
. I currently work for Catamaran as an editor
and have worked for three literary magazines in my academic career. I have experience with academic and creative writing
, copyediting, proofreading
, performance poetry, and theater. I have been writing creatively for 12 years and have been published twelve times since 2007 in various literary magazines. I primarily write poetry, but I also write fiction and memoirs/personal essays. I have been writing academic essays for approximately 10 years and won my first essay
-based scholarship in 6th grade
In high school I received an Academic Letter, was selected to join both the National Honor Society, and the National English Honor Society, and took over 10 English classes including several Independent Studies where I focused on my creative writing. In college I was selected to join the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key International Honor Society, and Phi Beta Kappa (the nations oldest academic honor society). I have also been involved with the slam poetry community (performance-based poetry), and several theatrical productions at UCSC.
My tutoring techniques are based on my own experience - what I have found helpful from my many teachers, professors, fellow students, and what I have discovered works best for me. I talk with my students to gain an understanding of where they are at, what they are struggling with, and what is expected of them, and work with them to find the most applicable and helpful solutions. Writing is a very personal action (even for academic essays it is important to find and develop a strong, personal voice) and so the methods that will be most helpful will vary with each student. I am an avid and passionate reader and am able to help students become comfortable with reading
and discover their own love for books. I have also acquired many helpful memorization and public speaking
/presentation skills and tips through my theatrical experiences that can be easily applied to any presentation, speech
, or performance.
