I have been teaching science and math for about 30 years. After retiring from the Pajaro Valley Unifed Schools, where I taught secondary Chemistry, Physics, Algebra and Geometry in the Watsonville/Aptos area, I worked at UCSC to supervise the training of college graduates for secondary science teaching positions in California public schools. I then travelled overseas, with the Peace Corps, to the Pacific Islands and Africa to help local teachers develop methods for teaching science, math and English. Since returning home, I have tutored a few students that were recommended to me by former teaching colleagues and found that I enjoy the one-on-one approach...it allows a personalized approach, makes it easier to find any stumbling blocks and help the student work past them.
We can schedule visits to your home, or we can meet at my home/office or another place mutually agreed upon, weekdays or weekends. A tutoring environment is often the best way to help a student center on their learning. I look forward to helping.
I was awarded the New Zealand Diploma in Teaching in 1977, specializing in science and physical education. I currently have California teaching credentials for elementary (clear multiple subject) and secondary (clear single subject with authorizations in mathematics, life science, and physical science), which were originally obtained in 1983. I have taught/tutored students in five countries (New Zealand, U.S., Chile, Tonga, Zambia), at all levels from kindergarten to college graduates and adult education, and for each level have been able to help students understand what is expected of them. For any particular task, I guide the student to the point where they can restate the task in their own words. Then I help them understand the resources/information they need to complete the task and how to use them. This often involves gleaning information from notes taken in class, textbooks, or the internet. So we work together on how to take notes and highlight them, and how to search texts or the internet for specific information. We also explore ways to help them remember facts or relationships (i.e. songs for younger students, mnemonic devices for older ones).
