I view tutoring as challenging and rewarding. I believe tutoring needs to be a continual dialogue between the learner and tutor. For me, a tutor's job is to listen as much as to give information. The learner has to communicate whether information is understood and the tutor has to listen so the learner can communicate. So my job includes creating an atmosphere that encourages a learner to describe what they understand whether that be with words or numbers or drawings, etc. As a tutor I listen to find out the learning style of a person as well as whether they understand the information we are discussing.

I graduated college with a degree as a mathematics teacher with a science minor. I taught mathematics in Chicago, IL, Oakland, Ca, for the department of the Army in Germany and for the El Paso Comunity College, TX. I returned to college at the University of Texas at El Paso and earned a degree in Educational Psychology. My career transitioned to the Computer Industry. I found that the Computer Industry requires many of the skills and thinking processes used in mathematics; I have been using my mathematics skills and abilities during my work experiences in the Computer Industry. I want to use my knowledge and teaching abilities to assist people who want and /or need to master mathematics skills.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Logic

My undergraduate degree is in Mathematics which requires logic. I completed set theory, and formal logic in undergraduate school. I completed probability theory in graduate school. I worked in the computer industry as a tier 2 help desk specialist solving a wide range of user problems over the phone which requires listening skills, communication skills as well as logic skills for over 15 years.

Study Skills

I have been a teacher for over 10 years and an educational counselor. I have studied how people learn. Some people need pictures or written instruction, others can listen and understand, others need physical experiences, etc. Not all information is assimilated by the same methods. People learn best when they understand how they assimilate information. When a person understands how s/he learns, they can adapt the learning situation to make their learning easier.

Swimming

I earned the Red Cross Junior and Senior Life Saving certification in high school. I went on to earn the Red Cross Water Safety certification. I taught swimming in Chicago, IL and El Paso, TX.
