Hi! Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile. Let me tell you a little bit about myself to help you decide whether or not I'm the right tutor for you.

I'm a high school English teacher in Campbell, where I started my teaching career nine years ago. I teach primarily 10th and 11th grade, but I have also taught 9th grade, ELD (a.k.a. ESL), and a California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Workshop. My two greatest passions as a teacher are helping kids to really love literature and teaching kids how to be effective, eloquent writers, and that's what I'm hoping to do more of as a tutor.

Before I was a teacher, I was also a reading/writing tutor at a clinic for students with learning disabilities, so I have experience in that area as well. In addition, throughout college I was a nanny for a family with three young children, two of whom had learning disabilities, and one of my primary responsibilities was to help them with their homework.

If you think I might be a good match for your tutoring needs, please email me with any additional questions you might have. Thanks again for your time!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CBEST

I took and passed the CBEST on 12/6/03 in the process of getting my teaching credential. I received a scaled score of 79/80 in the reading section, 70/80 in the math section, and 75/80 in the writing section, for a combined scaled score of 224/240.

English

I have a BA with Honors in English Literature from UC Santa Cruz, as well as a CA teaching credential in English, and a Master's in Education. I have taught high school English, primarily 10th and 11th grade, for the past seven years.

Literature

Good literature is one of my primary passions in life. I have been a voracious reader all my life, continuing to this day. I have a BA with Honors in English Literature from UC Santa Cruz, where I fell in love particularly with Faulkner, Twain, and Tolstoy. I have taught high school English, primarily 10th and 11th grade (world literature and American literature), for the past seven years. In particular, I have a strong background in American literature, especially African American literature.

Proofreading

I have a BA with Honors in English Literature from UC Santa Cruz, as well as a CA teaching credential in English, and a Master's in Education. I have taught high school English, primarily 10th and 11th grade, for the past seven years, and proofreading student writing is a major function of my job. In addition, I have experience proofreading adult writing, having edited a colleague's novel, as well as having worked with college-age students on their writing.

Writing

I have a BA with Honors in English Literature from UC Santa Cruz, as well as a CA teaching credential in English, and a Master's in Education. As a student, I never received anything less than an A- on an essay, throughout both high school and college. I have taught high school English, primarily 10th and 11th grade, for the past seven years. One of my primary objectives is teaching good writing skills, and I have created and collected a wide variety of materials to help in that endeavor.

Great English Tutor! — When we met Alison two semesters ago, our daughter was struggling with essay-writing and she was pretty stressed out. Her high school is very demanding and has very high standards for essays. Alison, who is an English teacher at another local high school, was able to teach our daughter, step by step, the fundamentals of writing, how to write effectively, elegantly and clearly. Alison is very pa ...
