I have successfully tutored children of all ages, helping them with writing, reading, arithmetic, geography, history, social sciences, science projects, art projects. I am very motivational, patient, kind and enthusiastic, and generally even the most stubborn children will come to enjoy doing their homework and school projects and their learning process.
Special needs children have been my students for years, and have taught the classes for the teachers. I have handled 1:1 students as well as up to 9 children in classroom depending on their behavioral traits. I have worked with failure to thrive children as well as physically challenged children. This is my heart work; my own brother has been 100 disabled since the Vietnam War, so I have always worked and volunteered with disabled children and adults.
In 2003, I started an organization to assist physically challenged quilt artists, teaching them professional development and also helping them to get excellent and very low cost exposure for their work. In 2005, I made the organization into a nonprofit with virtually no money or outside help. I have continued to run it successfully to the present.
I have been a Navigator for physically challenged adults at a One-Stop Center where people go to get help with job searches, resumes, learning basic computer skills which I taught and other skills needed to get jobs.
I can speak adequate Spanish and can communicate as needed in the language, and I can help Spanish speaking students to learn English.
My success record with tutoring children is very good. One girl who was failing English turned her work around and made a 98 on a written and oral presentation with my guidance and encouragement. One autistic boy began to read and learn facts he needed to know when I made special books for him based on the things he obsessed on such as the school bus. One autistic girl who repeatedly drew all over her math and other homework stopped doing that when I made her two separate books and decorated one beautifully for her art so that she wanted to draw in that book. I also used it as a reward for her once she finished her math.
In general, children like me very much and work with me easily because I am a grandma figure and also because I am very creative, observing each child and what works for him or her, and what I think might help make the child's work easier. I also understand a child's frustration with sitting in school all day and then having to come home and do more work, so I try to be very thoughtful about that. I was a child once myself and so I truly understand these things.
I am listing many of my accomplishments below because it indicates a good understanding of all the skills a good tutor needs to be successful with children. I have taught myself many of these skills. I have very strong research skills, and am very good at finding resources to help others.
