I was a paraeducator for many years with the Redondo Beach and Torrance Unified School Districts, both as a substitute and permanent employee for all age children and all grades. ADD/ADHD students were a very large part of our Special Education community. I have worked with these students both as a 1:1 and managing them in study centers after regular classes to help them get their homework done.

Anthropology is an aspect of my training in Archaeology. I worked in the field in Arizona near Tempe, Arizona, down near Cholula, Mexico, and also in the field in Mata Ortiz, Mexico with Spencer MacCallum, Anthropologist, who discovered and made famous Juan Quezada and the Potters of Mata Ortiz. There are many web sites about them. I assisted with this project in many ways. This is anthropology at its best, for I studied the effect of the success of the Mexican potters on their society and culture. It changed their culture forever, in some ways positively, and in perhaps more ways, negatively.
I have a B.A. in Archaeology from Arizona State University (1975). I also studied Spanish for my Archaeology degree in Mexico in 1975 at the Universidad de las Americas in Cholula, Mexico. I worked in the field in Tempe, Arizona as well as Mata Ortiz, Mexico, with my former husband, Spencer Heath MacCallum, who discovered some potters there. With his help and my assistance to Spencer, the potters, Juan Quezada and the potters of Mata Ortiz are now internationally famous. I studied the evolution of the pottery styles over time and also the fact that this was NOT a continuing tradition over time. There had been a clear break in the pottery making since the earliest pottery shards we discovered.
I love teaching children and adults "living archaeology," or the principles of archaeology applied to our living culture. I have been asked by teachers to help children with special archaeology projects and am very good at coming up with projects that are fun and provide some good experience in the practice of archaeology.

As a Paraeducator for special needs children of all ages for many years with the Torrance and Redondo Beach Unified School Districts, Aspergers students were among those with Autism. Aspergers is a somewhat milder form of Autism, generally where the students lack social skills, but have good educational skills, particularly frequently in math and music. Most of the students or others I have known with Aspergers are teens or adults. I worked with a number of teens with Aspergers.

I was a paraeducator for all ages of special needs children with the Redondo Beach and Torrance Unified School Districts for many years, both as a substitute and a permanent employee. Perhaps as many as 90% of our students had some form of Autism vs. some of the other developmental challenges such as Downs Syndrome. Most of us learn on the job from our experiences how to best work with these children. We call our training "The School of Hard Knocks" because most of us have been at one time (before formal training) been hit, kicked, had our hair pulled, been bitten, pinched, and even spit on. This is especially true when working with nonverbal students, though it can happen with any developmentally challenged student.
As a substitute paraeducator, it is imperative that we learn how to very quickly assess each child for his/her learning/behavioral traits, and to determine the best methods of working with him/her. We rarely get to read the IEP and we have but the briefest of introductions in the shortest amount of time to begin working with the child. I have worked with failure to thrive children, runners, children who are hearing impaired, children with physical as well as developmental challenges and basically all manner of developmentally/physically challenged children.
We do take training to learn how to prevent these children from hurting themselves or others in the classroom, and we also learn ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) which is more generally used in a laboratory setting rather than in the everyday classroom.
My goal in working with the children assigned to me has always been to help them be as successful and confident as they can be, and to have a joyful experience in their lives. I am one of the most motivational and encouraging people you will ever meet.
In 2003, I started a small nonprofit, Fiberarts Connection of Southern California, to provide exposure for the work of physically challenged fiber artists, and also to teach them professional development for their careers. Most physically challenged artists are very isolated from the community in general, and so they absolutely need professional development.
I am a professional artist myself, and also I have experience from working with the potters of Mata Ortiz, Mexico with Spencer MacCallum, who made these unknown potters world famous and also helped stimulate the economy in the area. There are now more than 400 potters in the village, whereas there were some 8 potters when they were first discovered. In 2003, I began to work in the One-Stop Centers, one in Redondo Beach, and one in Long Beach, CA. I was responsible for teaching introductory computer classes (MS Word, Excel, Using the Internet Safely to Search for jobs). I also helped people to write their resumes successfully regardless of the actual experience they had to work with. I also taught them general workability skills so that they knew how to dress properly, act properly, etc. on job interviews and after securing employment. I received numerous excellent reviews from the clients. I also helped and encouraged them with setting goals for their career development.
I was the Navigator for physically challenged job seekers, helping them with available resources and career development.
Having had a number of my own successful businesses, I am quite adept at helping others with their career development. I can work with a person, talking to them about their goals, and can determine quickly whether the goals they have set are realistic or good goals for them. If the person is unsure of which direction to go with career development, I can talk with them and help them to make a good decision using the skills and knowledge they have already to move forward. They might need to get more schooling or training to make a good choice, in which case, I will assist them with making good decisions, as well as showing them how to follow up with their career development.

I took my CBEST test in the early 1980s, and have my CBEST certificate, but it is currently packed and will need to wait until I get moved to Calimesa and then get things unpacked to be able to send a copy. Because it is so old, the CBEST people do not seem to have their own copy as I have tried to get a new copy in the past.

I wrote and published a 250 page cookbook about pumpkins, with history, folklore, nutritional information, and growing hints, as well as truly unique recipes. I love to cook, and enjoy cooking many interesting dishes to share with friends. I have an excellent sense of what combinations of ingredients work well together. Of late, I have been experimenting with homemade dog biscuits, and they are quite a success in my MH park with the various residents for their dogs.
I have been creating art using drawing and other media for years. I did take a drawing class at El Camino College in Redondo Beach, CA back in the 1970s, but I am mostly self-taught. I am constantly drawing one thing or another.
One of the methods I like to use is to have my students not look at their hands while they are drawing the subject. We also work in measured time limits, which helps you to gain confidence to just draw instead of always judging and correcting. I make art fun and exciting. I currently teach an "Art in the Garden" class monthly in my area.
As a Paraeducator with special needs children in all grades (including K-6th), I worked with one on one students and with groups of students as needed by the teachers. I also worked with regular students K-6, giving lessons in in the classroom every day to assist the teachers. I taught these children reading, writing. math, science projects, art, and also special projects. I accompanied them on the playground, teaching them games and making sure no one got hurt. I went with them to lunch and made sure each child was adequately eating and not causing problems during lunch. I have a great heart for working with children, and my goal is always to see them be successful and happy in life.
Math is something I too struggled with as a child. I think if I had then had a tutor to help me, I could have done well. My own parents didn't finish school themselves so they were unable to help me. Once I grew up and did in fact get tutors, I did fine, and I also thought that it would be good to help others to get through their math without so much struggle. I am sure I can help an elementary child to get through his or her math and not just get through, but to thoroughly grasp it and do well.
I am a published writer and professional editor and have worked for a magazine and two small newspapers as the editor. I have many years of writing experience; my publications are all nonfiction, and include a cookbook, research paper and a quilt history book.
I have been a tutor for illiterate adults, teaching them how to read, and I wrote several small books for that purpose. I am currently volunteer editor for one of my professional organizations' quarterly newsletter. I am also a volunteer professional grantwriter.
I have two children's books I have written that I probably will publish once I decide on the art I want for each one.
The GED is not really so difficult. It does include all subjects, but it is not rocket science, and with the help of a good tutor you will do well. I will have a workbook or lessons printed for you to help you follow up if you don't have these things.
Former One Stop (Job Search Center for the City) manager - teaching computer classes to those searching for jobs. I have taught general computer skills for years and am very comfortable with the day-to-day use of the computer and Internet.
I worked for a time at a One-Stop Center where people came to look for and apply for jobs using the computer. I taught Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, and always received excellent ratings on my teaching. Microsoft is wonderful in that if you learn one of their programs, you will be able to learn ALL their programs because there is a consistency and logic about how the programs work. As for learning Excel, it is not difficult, and Excel has many potentials that you can explore.
I taught MS Word at a One Stop Job Center, and I have been using it for around 20+ years myself. I am very comfortable with MS Word and once you learn it, you can learn a lot of other programs more easily, such as Excel, etc.
We used phonics when I was a Paraeducator with grades K-6. I especially used phonics with some of the special needs children as a tool to help them learn to read. My own daughter learned to read at two years of age because I used phonics to teach her to recognize words. It is a great tool for children who otherwise are having difficulty learning to read.
I am a former newspaper and magazine editor, and have professionally edited several nonfiction books. I did technical writing for several years for a major hospital software company, and also worked as an editor for a professional organization of computer engineers and writers, producing many books for conferences and other professional gatherings. I am also a published author of nonfiction articles in magazines; research paper in an annual quilt history journal; a 250-page cookbook with history, folklore, growing hints and nutrition as well as unique recipes; and a full-length book on quilt history which is under revision. I am a professional grant writer and very comfortable with research and writing, whether formal or informal.

I believe that every child, no matter WHAT the special need, be it autism, Down's Syndrome, or other forms of physical/developmental challenge, can be assisted to live a happy life at some level.

My own brother is 100% disabled since the Vietnam War, so it has given me cause to serve all physically/developmentally challenged children and adults with true commitment and dedication. We are given new assignments each year with the school district. The last couple of years, I ended up in the Study Centers, where we helped students to do their homework, or tutored them with subjects with which they were struggling.
I assisted both one on one special needs students and regular students to improve their study skills, often resulting in improved grades. I generally had them work on the things they least wanted to do first to make sure those things got done and then they could go on to the things they liked more. I reviewed their homework to make certain it was correct, or if it was not, I helped them to go back over it and correct it. One girl went from failing in English to getting a 98 on a paper she wrote because I showed her how to address her topic more thoroughly and in more depth, showing passion in her writing, which took the paper from a normal paper to an exceptional paper
I assisted the students to have good behavior in class by positive reinforcement such as acknowledging them for their good work or for their good behavior. One of my special needs students always scribbled drawings all over her homework books so that the teacher was constantly giving her a bad grade even though she was very smart. I solved this issue by providing her with a very pretty drawing notebook which she could fill with her drawings when she was finished with her math and other homework. She also went from scribbling all over the page to imaginative and wonderful drawings which were worthy of the best sketchbook. The youngest ones got rewards such as stars on their charts, and when their charts were full, they got a special little gift such as a jar of bubbles, or some other little gift they could pick out.
I am very patient, kind, and the most motivational/encouraging person you may ever meet. Working with children or adults is my heart work, not just a job. I really put myself into making sure that every single student is as successful as humanly possible and that each student feels very satisfied with his/her progress.
I love history, whether World History or American History. I have to admit that as a young person, I had trouble with these subjects. I never had the benefit of a tutor, nor did I have a context to fit my studies into. As I grew older, however, I found contexts for these subjects that appealed to me and made me hungry to connect the facts of World and American History with my specific interests. Today I cannot seem to get enough history. This is what I endeavor to instill in my students.
I will look hard to find my students' particular interests and then I will find ways to connect their interests with World and American History. History won't be just a subject we have to learn and "cough out on a test," but rather something meaningful for our lives. I believe each student can be successful in these subjects. This is my heart work, and I am not satisfied until my students are satisfied and successful.
I am a published non-fiction writer and former editor of a magazine and two newspapers. I have also been a professional editor of nonfiction books, and served as editor for a professional organization of computer engineers, editing papers for books to be distributed at conferences and other professional gatherings. I often edited several books at the same time. I co-authored a quilt history research paper in 1994 for the American Quilt Study Group. It was published in their annual journal. My co-author and I also presented our paper live in Birmingham, Alabama in front of a very large international audience.
I have also written small books for the Laubach Literary Method of teaching reading to adults who are illiterate.
Further writings include a published pumpkin cookbook with folklore, history, nutritional information and growing hints, as well as 250 pages of recipes, most of which I created from scratch. I have also co-authored a book on one aspect of quilt history - the kit quilt industry which began around the turn of the 20th century.
I can definitely help anyone become a better writer. One of my students went from barely passing to getting a 98% on her term paper with my encouragement and assistance. I have a strong skill in helping students who don't care to read and writing or don't do well in those subjects become good fans of reading and writing. I am confident that with my assistance, students will learn and improve in their reading AND writing.
