Santa Clara University (Environmental Studies)
Hi prospective students, my name is Ricky, and I have over seven years of experience as a professional tutor. I am passionate about tutoring because it helped me achieve academic success in my own life. I struggled with certain subjects when I was a child, but ended up being valedictorian when I graduated from Woodside High School in the Class of 2005, received top scores on my AP exams, and was admitted to 10 universities across the country.
I pride myself on my easygoing and effective tutoring style: being patient, encouraging, and empowering. I work with students to internalize concepts, not just memorize them. When a student begins to cognitively understand something for herself/himself, real learning happens. I am committed to this form of student-centered, top-notch tutoring that gets the best results over time. If the student/parent prefers, I am also happy being more didactic and instructive in my style. Oftentimes, it is a balance that works (with a focus on empowerment and student-centered learning). Finally, I tailor my approach to the student's own learning style, which is critical for academic success. Whether auditory, visual, or kinesthetic, each student learns differently.
In terms of my own academic path, I was honored to receive the Harvard Book Award and to attend Stanford University's Institute on Journalism. I later graduated from Santa Clara University with academic honors and two degrees. Academics are very important to me; my passion for teaching comes from my passion for learning. I love to see the "lightbulb" go off in a student's head as well as helping others reach their own epiphanies and develop by means of a well-rounded education.
My tutoring expertise includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English (ESL or advanced English) and Spanish. I have tutored students of all ages, from elementary school through college. As an academic tutor in a local after-school program, I worked with 4th and 5th graders at a local elementary school close to the border of San Mateo and Hillsborough. Previously, I was employed as a professional tutor by the Drahmann Learning Resources Center while I attended Santa Clara University, often tutoring students older than myself. I tutored students in a variety of subjects, including English, Spanish, writing, reading comprehension, political science, environmental studies, sociology and more. In addition, I have also tutored many adults (ESL, Spanish, and other subjects). I have recently tutored students (children and adults) from a variety of countries around the world, including Korea, France, China, Japan, Russia, Mexico, India, Bangladesh, and more. It is a pleasure to work with students from such diverse backgrounds.
Please contact me with tutoring opportunities or with questions. I am very accessible and look forward to working with you or your child to achieve academic success. Richard is an extraordinary tutor. By the end of the first Spanish tutoring session, he somehow infused my son with the confidence that he could really exceed at learning a language, where before he was extremely frustrated with himself. Richard was calm and reassuring, encouraging my son at appropriate points along the way. He's authentic, sincere and not at all pedantic. He's helped my son break down how to learn the Spanish tenses and understand conjugation, as well as how to organize his notes and maintain good study habits. When they don't have an assignment to complete, Richard reviews grammar and other foundational parts of learning the Spanish language. I'm very grateful we found Ricky and most importantly that he's helped my son find his confidence with Spanish!
I was very pleased with the services I received from Richard (Ricky). With English as my second language, I struggled with my first year in college level English. Although I learned in class what to do with the outlines of my papers, Ricky broke it down for me and explained it in a way for me to understand. Throughout the semester I noticed the great changes in my work and I have Ricky to thank for that. I started with "C" graded papers filled with markings of corrections and by the end of the semester I was an "A" student. Every time I needed help Ricky was there and was very quick in response. If anyone is struggling with English, whether it has to do with outlines of papers, spelling, context of words, this is the tutor for you!
Ricky is truly an outstanding tutor! He has a tremendous grasp of Spanish and it is truly amazing to see how far I have advanced. From not knowing Spanish at all, after 15 lessons from Ricky, I have the ability to carry on basic conversations. I highly recommend Ricky!
Thank you so much for your time last night. It was a very impressive lesson. I'll keep studying ESL with him.
My son has very positive and productive sessions with Richard and he has been very helpful in identifying the key issues to focus on. Richard has shown to be flexible based on my son's needs for that week placed his focus where it would help the most. I would highly recommend Richard as a Spanish tutor!!
Ricky is a kind and patient tutor. He worked on writing and history with our daughter. We really appreciated his help and support.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor Elementary (K-6th) because of experience tutoring children in this age range. I worked with Newton, The Children's Learning Center, Inc. (headquartered in Foster City, CA) and worked with this age group at Baywood Elementary School in San Mateo, CA. I tutored children each day during this after-school program (from 2:30-6 PM). I worked with children in a variety of grades and helped them learn mathematics, reading and writing skills, science, and more. My methods included asking questions as a diagnostic gauge of their understanding and then teach them a concept in a patient and lighthearted manner. Gaining a child's trust and attention is just as important as didactically teaching material. My experience tutoring children in multiple subjects and at these grade levels qualifies me to tutor Elementary (K-6th).
I am qualified to tutor in Sociology because I took many sociology classes while attending Santa Clara University and excelled in them. I included a variety of sociology courses in my Peace and Justice Studies degree and successfully completed all the courses. I have tutored numerous students in various sociology classes and have the skills to help them analyze and understand the concepts involved.
I am approved/certified by WyzAnt as a Spanish tutor.
I am qualified to tutor students in study skills because I have helped numerous tutees significantly improve their study techniques, leading them to higher scores on their tests, quizzes, and final exams. My tutoring methods emphasize effective study habits: making a thorough plan about what needs to be covered, in what order, and then executing on that plan. I have helped students become more disciplined, systematic, and focused in their study skills. I follow up with students between tutoring sessions to check in on their studying. I provide homework assignments for some of my students and use this tool to measure their study skills over time. I look over their assignments and discern how they are studying. I affirm what they are doing well and offer tips and suggestions in terms of improvements. Typically, making a plan and reviewing its execution has been the most effective way to help students improve their study habits and achieve better outcomes.
