History has always been my favorite subject and I am excited to share my knowledge with students, both in the classroom, and as a tutor. When studying history, I think it is crucial to understand the "why." Why people in the past behaved as they did and why they made the decisions they did. History should be more than a list of names and dates to memorize. The "why" makes the names and dates make sense and helps students remember the chronology.
While obtaining my Master's degree in history, I had plenty of opportunity to put my writing and reading comprehension skills to use. I strongly believe that being able to express yourself articulately in writing is an invaluable skill. I am excellent proofreader and am often asked to proofread my peers' papers and explain my suggestions to them. I know students often get their drafts returned with changes, but no explanation. I think the explanation is the most important part if students are expected to understand how to improve their writing.
Reading, both comprehension and enjoyment, are important qualities for students to have. I have had more than one student tell me, "you explain it so it makes sense." I also taught for a reading development program and learned many useful techniques to make reading more accessible, even to students who claim to hate reading. Often, they hate it, because it is difficult. I can help make reading easier and more fun.
I am experienced teaching in the classroom and in more unconventional settings, such as historic sites and museums. I especially enjoy working with students one-on-one, because it allows me to tailor my teaching style to their needs.
