Dear Parents and Students,
I am an actor, writer, and improviser, and I understand the importance of a high level of reading and writing, especially for those who are preparing for college or another form of higher education. I keep my students minds active, using creative writing exercises to help them find and own their own literary voice, then help them to harness that voice in the context of their writing. Please regard the following.
While studying English Literature at Northwestern University, I helped to counsel my fellow students when I was acting Social Chair of Sargent Hall. I organized and facilitated weekly study groups, work-shopped and edited papers, and created a common space for peer academic guidance. I personally revised peer essays for grammatical and syntactical errors, and was able to advise them on textual critical analysis as well.
I have Assistant Directed and continued to consult for Northwestern’s only minority sketch-comedy group, Out Da’ Box. I hold rehearsal workshops to help young writers to develop their voice as sketch-writers. This includes improvisation, theatrical practices and a practical analysis of sketch-structure. I allow the students to experiment with their style, and encourage them to push their own personal envelope of creativity.
I served Northwestern University’s school news paper as both a developmental writer and a campus beat reporter, covering everything from campus design competitions to live music events in Chicago. I studied poetry under Mary Kinzie, and am familiar with the process of workshop-writing, peer revising, and composition on a professional level. In my 84-page dissection of my own work, I learned the proper methods of accurately breaking-down compositions into their proper elemental divisions to provide the correct academic vantage point from which a thorough edit and re-draft can be performed, and attained a crucial grasp of the writing process only gained through advanced literary analysis. I was able to take what I learned in my education and apply them to the accomplishments listed above and in the body of my resume.
I am confident in my ability to reach out to students, help them expand their literary capacity and simultaneously build confidence in their own voice as well. I believe I can make a difference, and would love to know I have done my part to prepare young adults for the opportunities they will gain with a higher education. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have regarding my skill-set, dedication, or work ethic, and I will be happy to answer you.
Thank you for your consideration,
Northwestern University, School of Communications 2010
