ADD/ADHD

I have several years of experience in special education from preschool through high school level. I have worked with many students with learning differences and special needs. I am sensitive to and appreciative of the unique learning styles and pace of each individual. I also enjoy building on each student's strengths to help him/her be as resourceful and self-reliant as possible. I focus on the individual student in looking for ways to increase skills, understanding and achievement. I believe that learning can be fun and rewarding. I am creative and flexible in finding ways to make subjects interesting and engaging.

Anthropology

I have a Bachelor's Degree in anthropology. I have studied cultural and physical anthropology. Coursework I have taken includes medical, psychological and economic anthropology as well as social structure, linguistics and archaeological lab studies.

Aspergers

I have years of experience working in special education from preschool through high school level. I understand and am sensitive to the unique abilities and learning styles and pace of each individual. My approach is to focus on the student to find ways to engage her with the learning material. I build on the strengths of the student and enjoy helping her be as resourceful and self-reliant as possible.

Autism

I have several years of experience in special education. I understand and am sensitive to the unique abilities, learning style and pace of each individual. I adapt the learning material to the needs of the individual in order to maximize their engagement, understanding and progress. I believe learning can be fun and rewarding. I enjoy helping the student be as resourceful and self-reliant as possible.

Dyslexia

I have a background in special education. I am sensitive to and respectful of each individual's unique abilities, learning style and pace. My focus is centered on the individual and I approach learning based on the student's needs. I enjoy building on the student's strengths and helping them be as resourceful and self-reliant as possible.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked as a teacher's assistant in a L.A.U.S.D. elementary school. I have also worked with elementary school students with special needs. I tutor elementary level subjects including Reading, Writing and Math. My college education provided a solid foundation in many disciplines.

I believe that learning can be an adventure and I try to make it rewarding and fun. I understand and respect the unique abilities, learning pace and styles of each individual. I enjoy nurturing and developing the strengths and capacities of each individual with patience.

ESL/ESOL

I teach ESL to adults from South America for Open English. I've tutored ESL to students from Mexico, Armenia, Japan, Korea and Thailand. I assist with vocabulary development, pronunciation, grammar, writing and conversation. I have helped students prepare for the TOEFL iBT exam. I focus on the students' areas of interest as well as vocabulary and usage that applies to their careers and lifestyles.

General Music

I studied music for many years. I played the piano, violin and viola. My background includes theory, history and applied music.

Painting

I studied graduate fine art with a focus on studio art (painting). I've worked with watercolor, acrylic and oils. I can assist with technique using various materials and stretching and preparing canvas as well.

Phonics

I teach English, grammar and language arts to children and adult native English speakers as well as English language learners. I teach English as a Second Language skills such as vocabulary, pronunciation, conversation and grammar.

Special Needs

I have worked with students with learning disabilities, developmental disabilities and severe emotional disturbance as a tutor and teacher's assistant with The HELP Group's New School for Child Development and Optimist High School. I have also done job training, supported employment and assessment for students with developmental disabilities with The C.I.T.Y. Program.

I understand and respect the unique abilities and learning pace and styles of each individual. I believe that every individual is of value and has beneficial qualities to offer. I enjoy nurturing and helping students develop and express their unique strengths and talents.

Study Skills

I have worked as a tutor and teacher's assistant in regular public school and special education milieu. I have worked with all levels from preschool through high school and adult. I acquired study skills during my college educational process and can help students find ways to solve and break down problems in a systematic, effective way. I can help students be resourceful in researching information and learning how to solve problems.

I understand and respect each individual's unique abilities, learning pace and styles. I recognize and build on each student's strengths and assist in developing his or her capacities. I believe that learning is an adventure and I strive to make it rewarding, exciting and fun.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
