My approach to tutoring is to meet my student where they are - what are their strengths, what do they struggle with, and (most importantly) what interests them? How can I help you to work on what skills you already have and to expand your expertise into areas that you previously felt were too difficult or too confusing to master?
I feel that as a tutor, my task is to be able to translate whatever the material is into a language that you understand and can apply yourself. By doing this, I am encouraging you to put things into your own words and to make the concepts we are studying become relevant to how you already understand the world. I believe that with the right kind and amount of one-on-one attention, people can learn any subject and develop themselves into the students that they wish to be. I have been tutoring students in Psychology and Philosophy as well as helping others more generally with their writing skills.
Currently, I am teaching part-time as an adjunct faculty member at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology at their downtown Los Angeles campus. I have an undergraduate degree (BA) with a major in Psychology and a minor in Philosophy that I earned in May 2006. I continued my studies in Psychology and earned my doctoral degree (PsyD) in August 2010. I have continued my interest in philosophy on my own, reading and speaking with philosophy teachers and graduate students over the past five years. I have ADHD and she has greatly assisted me in organization and execution of homework and writing. I am a clinical psychology doctoral student and she has helped me in classes such as family systems, psychoanalytic, research methods, personality assessment, advanced assessment, and CBT. Moreover, she has helped me study for tests, write papers, draft outlines, correct grammar and maintain a positive attitude that facilitated my learning. Additionally, she has been helpful with all ADHD issues such as test anxiety, homework help, organization help, and planning assignments. She is a nice person and will help you in whatever assignment you need help with!!!!
I will be using her again, really helpful! I was blessed to have found her on such short notice, she communicated with me every step of the way, very professional.
I've had Vanessa to read proof and edit a research proposal and descriptions of my Architectural design work. She was very friendly, patient, and helpful. She is also time efficient. I gave her the documents and they were ready the next day. I would definitely recommend her for friends and will ask for her help for future tutoring.
She is also very helpful in answering any questions and concerns a student has. Nice and patient, love her teaching.
I could finish my philosophy paper on time!! Without her help it would been difficult for me and it took us a less amount of time to finish the paper. I came with rough draft and she helped with structures and corrections that it turned out to an A paper. I was so happy and worth of everything. She is very helpful and patient and understands exact tutee's needs. I'm highly recommend her to those who seek writing assistance.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am well-read in the following philosophical thinkers: Plato, Aristotle, some general areas of Ancient Greek thought (for example the Stoics) Kant, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Emmanuel Levinas, Jacques Derrida, Jean Baudrillard John Locke, John Stuart Mill, Thomas Hobbes, and Rene Descartes.
I have experience tutoring people who need support proofreading and editing papers on both the undergraduate and graduate level.
I have edited and proofread both academic papers and personal statements for school applications.
I have had undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the following areas:
Research Design/Empirical Methods
Psychodynamic Theories of Mind
