I am a teacher and writer with experience in working with homeschoolers as well as children attending public school, multilingual programs, and private Montessori programs. Families seeking support for homeschooling welcome. One time test prep sessions available. Discounts for siblings and longterm students.
Materials including paper and pencils provided. I have a cottage set up as dedicated tutoring space, including fun, beautiful Montessori games and wide selection of books. I offer basic homework help and motivation as well as individually targeted tutoring skills for kids ages 5-16. I am a Montessori teacher who has worked in the public schools of Berkeley and Albany as a substitute, in local independent, multi-lingual Montessori schools as an English teacher, and most recently, at one of Berkeley's top preschools. I love reading and love helping children discover the joy of reading and expressing themselves in writing as they gain proficiency. By focusing on the fundamentals and strengthening specific skills, I can help your child succeed without tears, tantrums, stickers or candy. I hold a CA Children's Center Director Permit, which also includes a CA Child Development Master Teacher permit. Additionally, I hold a Montessori elementary permit from the American Montessori Society, which required 34 graduate units in education. I worked as a substitute teacher for grades K-12 for seven years, for both the Albany and Berkeley, CA school districts.

I hold a BA from Mills College Oakland and have published a non-fiction book on the topic of helping children learn to love reading. I have 40 graduate units including those to satisfy a CA Children's Center Director permit and those for a Montessori Elementary teaching credential. Experienced in working with bilingual students from Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish immersion programs.

My Montessori training specifically covered the Five Pillars of Literacy, i.e phonics, phonemics, vocabulary, fluency, and automaticity. I use manipulative materials including a set of individually cut out letters, card games, children's literature, and individualized writing and reading exercises to teach phonics. Additionally, I have written a book. The book uses the world-wide Cinderella story to explain the history of fairy tales, how children learn to read using the Five Pillars, and how reading fairy tales in general, and Cinderella in particular, can help make children better readers.

I am an experienced teacher who has coached many emerging readers. Using games, educational materials and children's literature, I teach the five pillars of literacy: phonics, phonemic understanding, fluency, vocabulary, and automaticity. These are the building blocks that give kids the confidence to read smoothly and easily, freeing them to open themselves to the joy of reading.

Social Studies

My Montessori Elementary teaching permit included the study of humanity, their biological development and progression from the Neolithic era, through the ancient civilizations. By using the fundamental needs of people as a guide, I am trained to lead studies based on the foods, clothing, shelter, communication, religious, arts, and political systems of nations.

Study Skills

As a Montessori teacher my training focused on helping children take responsibility for tracking their own work and managing its completion. As a substitute teacher for seven years I gained extensive experience in understanding the workings of large public school systems. As a parent, I have learned how to streamline the process of getting organized. As an autodidact I have learned to use technological solutions such as Siri, and the functions of iPads, iPhones to aid in creating reminders and to do lists, essential components of staying organized.

As a writer with a newly published non-fiction book, I am very conversant with the process of incorporating complex, divergent information into a coherent and readable text. My writing experience includes freelance pieces for the San Francisco Chronicle, op eds on subjects including education, and how history illuminates the present. As a parent who coached four children through high school, and as a teacher who has helped many students find their voice, I say to you: Let the words flow and together we will form them into a cohesive text of beauty!
