Ni hao! !
My name is Nico, originally from Taiwan, now a Bay area resident. Mandarin is my mother tongue. I tutor children and adults from beginner to advanced Chinese for educational, business needs, or just for pleasure. For quick results, I adapt my teaching options to your learning wishes: after school language programs, one-on-one private tutoring, or group settings.
In just a short time, I will teach you how to read and write traditional characters and how to speak conversational Mandarin Chinese. Students can choose Hanyu Pinyin and/or Bopomofo (zhuyin) to learn Chinese. Younger kids will benefit from a Waldorf education approach that includes Nursery Rhymes, Thousand Character Classics, stories, songs, games, art projects and much more combined with art, nature and culture projects…so much fun that they won’t even know they are learning a language!
I have a B.A degree in Chinese Literature from the internationally recognized National Taiwan University, together with an M.S. degree in Chinese Medicine and Art. My teaching methods apply learning techniques from the Rudolf Steiner College with an emphasis on Waldorf education. Following this creative approach, your language learning is fully integrated with nature, art, and therapeutic practices. By respecting each individual as a deep soul, learning Chinese becomes refreshing, accessible and fun.
I love to teach languages in the combined context of the culture and elements of Nature, Art and Language. Chinese characters are symbols from nature that reflect the essence of the culture. They are not dead subjects to learn, but a source of inspiration to be applied in your daily living communications.
My approach is also highly practical. I understand the dynamics of learning the language and the structural methods for teaching it. If you are studying for exams, you will learn to study Chinese in an effective way to pass with a high score, especially since I was “trained” and excelled under Taiwan’s intensely competitive educational system.
At the same time, I believe students learn best from their unique interests and inquiries, so I provide an atmosphere that allows you to explore your own understandings. A no-fear and open-minded learning environment is good for anyone, no matter what your background or academic level. Teaching materials can be either yours or mine. Whatever helps you learn most effectively!
I can tutor in Berkeley, where I reside, or anywhere within a 20 miles radius of my home. Whether it is for educational and business needs or just for pleasure, I am glad to bring my love of Mandarin Chinese language and culture to new students! I am a watercolor artist and color therapist too. Please feel free to contact me with all your inquiries.
