I have helped students pass courses and standardized tests for the past 10 years, tutoring suburban private middle school students, urban public high school students, Ivy League college students, and everyone in between. I have been teaching middle and high school math and science full-time for 9 years, and before grad school, I taught in Bolivia as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
If you are concerned about passing a test or a course in any of the following subjects, or would just like some extra help and support, I can help you master what you need, and leave the anxiety behind.
I also provide general support for test-prep, resume writing, grant proposal, business proposals, learning/improving computer skills, and other help. I give discounts for extended tutoring, multiple subjects, or small groups, as well as a discounted rate for tutoring via Skype.
I'm looking forward to helping you pass with flying colors! Fred has made math enjoyable again for my son. Fred's teaching methods really work for my son, he comes out of each session rejuvenated and excited about math. Fred's style just seems to click for my son. I am grateful for Fred's patience and determination in making my son grasp the concepts that have been so difficult for him to understand at school. Thanks Fred!!
Fred has a quiet but insistent style that really forces our son to solve problems for himself. He also can approach problems from many different angles, which allows him to find a technique that works for each individual. Plus he's a really nice guy, and our son seems eager to work with him.
To Whom it May Concern:
I am best pleased with Fred's excellent work tutoring my son to a successful B in his Spanish 1 course. My son has Asperger's Syndrome and is not the easiest student to tutor, but Fred was nonplussed from the first and dived right in with him. They worked together well from the outset but I hedged my bets by having Adam take this potentially difficult course credit/no credit. Imagine my surprise and pleasure when Adam made a B grade. Fred will continue to tutor Adam through Spanish 2 this spring term and I am certain of a successful outcome.
I can recommend Fred without reservations.
My daughter has really enjoyed working with Fred. He is tutoring her in IB Math Studies, where she has struggled to C's on tests. She says he is very good at explaining math concepts and she has been able to raise her test scores.
Fred was very easy to work with and learn from. He sharpened my Excel knowledge so that I can now easily zip through the many spreadsheets I use for my work with confidence. Highly recommend!
Fred did an amazing job with my daughter. We needed to finish our coursework early. He kept my daughter motivated and our goal has been reached!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching Biology and related Life Sciences for most of the past 9 years, mainly high school Biology, but also college Field Biology (at Cornell University) and AP Environmental Science. I have also taught other related Life Sciences, including creating and teaching courses in Genetics, Bioethics, Ornithology and Ecology.
I teach Genetics every year as part of my Biology or Life Science classes, and have also included Genetics units in a Bioethics course I used to teach. I also taught a Genetics independent study course to a high school senior.
I have been teaching middle and high school math for the past 10 years, including various levels of pre-algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, as well as other math classes (esp. trigonometry, geometry). I also teach various linear algebra skills and concepts in the science classes that I teach.
I have been using Mac desktops, laptops, and software for more than two decades, since even before they were called "Mac." I currently use a MacBook Pro for all of my professional, teaching, studies, and personal use, and have helped countless students learn how to use Mac software, including customizing and problem-solving.
In addition to teaching full-time 7th and 8th grade Life Science and Physical Science, I supplement my far-insufficient salary by working evenings and weekends as the Circulation Manager for Inquiring Mind Magazine. I manage their mailing list of 7,400 individual subscribers, plus group and international subscriber lists, using a series of Microsoft Access databases. I manage the databases, including creating new Access files, editing the existing ones, altering formats and views, generating reports, printing mailing lists and labels, etc.
I have been using Microsoft Windows since getting my first PC in 1990 with Windows 3.0. Since then, I have owned, used, and even managed and maintained work/school computers running Windows 95, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, and 7, and will be helping backstop tech support for the new computers running Windows 8 that were recently acquired by the school where I teach. Though my current personal computer is a Mac, I still use Windows almost daily at work and on my family's computers.
I have been teaching a pre-algebra Math Enrichment course for the past two years, and have been tutoring middle and high school students in pre-algebra and other math and science subjects for the past 9 years.
I have tutored Spanish for much of the past 9 years. I have also worked as a court-appointed translator and have taught have Bilingual Biology (in Spanish).
I lived in 3 Spanish-speaking countries for a total of 4 years (including 2 years in the Peace Corps in Bolivia, and another year doing Master's research in Costa Rica), and have led student travel in 3 Latin American countries. I currently teach in a 90% Latino school where almost all of my communications with parents are in Spanish, and where the school administration often requests my written and oral translation assistance.
As a full-time classroom teacher for 9 years, I have advised and/or mentored hundreds of students, helping them establish, maintain, and improve personalized systems that help them organize, prepare, and master their course work. I have taught study skills as a major component of test prep tutoring, and full-year test prep "Community" classes for my 6th-8th grade students, preparing them for the full suite of state-mandated STAR tests. I even taught a one-year elective "Academy" class on organization.
I have been teaching swimming to 6th through 8th graders as a volunteer at the Hilltop YMCA in Richmond, CA once a week for the past 10 months. Previously, I worked several summers lifeguarding and teaching swimming from 1987-1990.
I have two degrees in Natural Resources (B.S. from University of Michigan, M.S. from Cornell University), and did my Master's Thesis on avian ecology in Costa Rica. I also worked on a project studying antbirds and army ants in the Peruvian Amazon, and volunteered for 7 years at the National Zoological Park in Washington, DC, spending almost all of that time tending to animals or explaining them to the general public. I also lead birding outings and other natural history field trips, and have guest lectured on birds and other animals.
