Hey there! My name is Nick and I'm a student at UC-Berkeley, otherwise known as Cal. I graduated high school in 2011 with a weighted GPA of 4.51 and an unweighted GPA of 3.91. I excel in all sorts of subjects, especially mathematics, English, and American history. I'm also a highly qualified SAT tutor. I'm very up-to-date with the test, as I only took it two years ago. My score breakdown is as follows: 790 in Critical Reading, 780 in Math, 710 in Writing, 2280 Composite. I've been tutoring elementary, junior high, and high school kids for three years now. In my short history, I've had 9 clients, all of whom saw an improvement of at least one letter grade in the class for which they received tutoring. But aside from the stats and credentials, I love teaching. Nothing can quite quantify the feeling of satisfaction I get when a student has an "aHA!" moment. When they finally grasp the concept that's given them so much trouble, I know I've done my job. And furthermore, it's fun for me! Three years into this, I am hard-pressed to call tutoring a job. Being a college student myself, I know what makes kids tick. Whether it's through humor, sports, or what have you, I can find ways to connect to kids. And once I earn their trust, getting them interested in learning is nothing more than a cakewalk. If you're interested, I am too. Contact me!
I played varsity baseball in all four years of high school and continue to play at the club level in college. I have been the ace starter on every team I've been on in the last six or so years. With this experience, I can teach the basics of baseball, as well as advanced techniques in hitting, pitching, fielding, and baserunning. I'm also an avid participant in fantasy leagues, and can rattle off stats and rules of which few others are aware. Baseball is my favorite sport, and I guarantee that few know it better than I do.
I played basketball in recreational leagues throughout high school and continue to play at the club level in college. As a kid, I played center, but as everyone around me skyrocketed in height (so goes the plight of kids who love basketball), I reverted to the role of combo shooting guard/small forward. I excel behind the threepoint line and shoot above 85% from the foul line for my career. I can teach basic skills to young kids, and I can also teach advanced skills to those who are looking to improve their game.
Last summer I helped my calculus teacher's son with his summer reading, and it was a fantastically rewarding experience. Up to that point, her son had absolutely dreaded everything about books. He especially despised the book he had to read because it didn't involve Transformers (perhaps the most glaring fault of the Judy Blume series). As I began to help him see things like conflict and motivation and character development in the book - though not in so many words - he began to tolerate and eventually enjoy reading. He especially liked identifying with characters; he really connected with the idea that Judy Blume wasn't some fake person but rather a kid much like him. Since then, I've taken a special interest in opening heretofore closed doors in children's imagination, which lets them in on a world - the world of literature - that I hold very dear.
I played football at the Pop Warner level from 3rd through 8th grade. I did not continue in high school because I chose to focus on other sports, but I am still very knowledgeable in terms of techniques, rules, and everything in between. I can teach young kids the basics of the sport and show them how fun it can be.
