All of Janet’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Janet’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

English

I tutor English reading, writing and composition, and grammar. I’ve taught English in South Korea and have worked as a writing and grammar tutor for many years here in the U.S. I’ve worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, ranging from high school and university students to academics and business professionals. I have taught both native speakers of English as well as ESL students. I can help you master the nuances of grammar, polish your writing skills, increase your vocabulary and reading comprehension levels, improve your test scores, and enhance the effectiveness of your business communications. I’ll work with you to assess your individual needs and develop a customized study plan.

Government & Politics

I have an undergraduate degree in Political Science (with a minor in Asian Studies) and a J.D. in Law. I have a background studying American government, the U.S. Constitution, the Federal Court system, and U.S. legislation and regulations. I have also studied political and economic development in Asia (with an emphasis on Korea and Japan). I can help you do research, write papers, and study for exams on a wide range of government-related topics.

Law

I have a J.D. degree from UC Berkeley and am an active member of the California State Bar. I have handled litigation in both federal and California state courts, and I’ve also worked on a range of transactional and business matters (including contracts, licensing agreements, etc.). With this wide-ranging background, I have had a successful track record tutoring law students, paralegal students, and students training to be legal assistants. I can help you with your substantive law courses, legal research and writing, and exam prep. Whether you want to learn how to cite cases in a brief, how to understand procedural rules, or how to master writing answers to essay questions, I can be the resource you need!

LSAT

I have a J.D. in Law from UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). I have worked to help students improve on each section of the LSAT (reading comprehension, logical reasoning, and logic games). I work one-on-one with students to practice test-taking techniques and time management strategies. I am happy to help students enrolled in LSAT courses with extra practice, as well as students who are engaged in self-study.

Proofreading

Do you need someone to help you with your homework, essay, resume, article, or other document? I can help!

I proofread and edit a wide range of documents, including essays, academic papers, business documents (business plans, website copy, white papers, marketing material, etc.), letters, legal documents, books, articles, and much more! I work quickly and accurately, and I can show you what I corrected so that you can improve your own writing. I can also help you during the research and writing process, if necessary.

I am familiar with typical stylistic and citation formats, such as MLA, APA, Bluebook, CMS (Chicago) and AP. I’m happy to work with short deadlines!

SAT Reading

The SAT Critical Reading section can be a challenge even for excellent students! I can help you learn how to read efficiently, how to approach the questions, and how to use your study time effectively. I can also help you build up your vocabulary so that you can achieve better results.

SAT Writing

In order to perform well on the SAT Writing section, you need a firm understanding of the fundamentals of English grammar and style. I can help you learn the most important concepts that will be tested on the SAT. I can also teach you a strategy for approaching the questions and quickly eliminating incorrect answers.

I can also help you prepare for the essay-writing section of the SAT. I will show you how to structure your essay, select appropriate examples, use effective transitions, and create strong arguments.

TOEFL

I spent several years teaching students in South Korea to take the TOEFL exam. I have also worked with students from a wide range of other countries achieve the TOEFL score they need.

For the reading and listening comprehension sections of the test, I focus on vocabulary-building, reading/listening strategies, note-taking practice and question-type analysis. For the speaking and writing sections, I focus on creating answer templates, improving pronunciation and organization, and using transitions correctly.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
