Calculus

Calculus is one of the greatest inventions in the history of humanity. It is the intellectual machinery by which the infinities of space, time, and smooth curves can be converted into the relatively concrete realm of numbers and symbols. I believe the world would be a richer place if more people understood at least the beginnings of calculus, and so I teach this subject with great enthusiasm. I can help you with a calculus curriculum up through multivariable ("Calc 3"), as well as differential equations.

Chemistry

"Chemistry is your baby, right?" This question was once asked to me by a student's mother-- she'd overheard a tutoring session. With this question, she taught me something about myself. I do indeed love chemistry and take great care to make sure my explanations are understandable and make sense. I've tutored many students in AP Chem and know the curriculum well. If you are struggling in any level of chemistry up through organic, I can help you out.

Computer Science

I've been programming and studying computer science for about 4 years. My primary language is Ruby, but I have experience in Julia, Javascript, Java, Python, LISP, Perl, and C. I designed the database behind the Hippocampome neuroscience website and am skilled in common data manipulation and analysis programming tasks. I can work with students on coding basics (control-flow, syntax, etc), basic website design (HTML, Javascript, CSS), databases (MySQL, SQLite), and object-oriented programming concepts.

Physics

Physics is where algebra comes to play. Many students find their physics classes difficult because it is the first time that they've been asked to apply their algebraic skills in a 'real world' context. I focus on patching holes in student's algebra skills, and teaching them to translate physical situations into mathematical equations. I very much enjoy watching my students discover the power of mathematics to represent objects in space, and the power of algebra to convert complex reasoning into a series of symbolic manipulations. I can help you with any level up through a first-year calculus-based college physics course.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
