I am a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and a current student at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. I have taught and tutored for five years, most of that as a full time tutor. I specialize in boosting students' confidence and in bringing them to a place where they can learn independently from their experience at school or conquer a scary test with confidence. Many of my students have been stuck in a place of great frustration or even trauma after or during a difficult experience with a subject or stage in life; I take great joy in walking through those difficult times with them, helping them to find their own ability to grow and succeed.
I have had the chance to work with students of all ages, from 4 to 40-something, in a number of different settings. I was an associate teacher at a private elementary school, where I was the primary 4th grade math instructor; I managed a math tutoring center, directing the instruction of dozens of students; and I have privately tutored over 100 other students from all different types of schools and families. Recently I helped to edit a test-prep book on the ISEE and SSAT. With a little encouragement and help from a person they trust, I believe that every student can be successful, especially in subjects like math that are often shrouded in mystery and anxiety. I have also worked and consulted with a number of students who have special needs like ADD, speech delays, executive function impairments, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, and have a good deal of experience seeking out additional resources and working with schools and families to create a plan that works for each student.
I have had a number of positive academic experiences from which I draw to help students enjoy their own. I was a liberal arts major at the University of Notre Dame, where I was a part of the research and writing-oriented honors program and an employee of the library. I have recently begun a master's program at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. I also have a knack for standardized test taking, and I have tutored dozens of students preparing for the ISEE, SSAT, SAT, and SAT II. I'm happy to provide additional information, experience, qualifications, and references upon request.
I am currently taking on new students, and as a student myself, I have a relatively flexible schedule. I am particularly interested in tutoring students long-term, as I intend to be in the area for at least 3 years, although I am also happy to take on short term clients. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to begin a conversation about how tutoring might work for your family. I do my best to be a courteous and professional tutor who students and families can know and trust over time. I know it's hard to find a person online for such an important and often sensitive position, and so I welcome the chance to speak by phone and to interview in person before beginning.
