St. Mary's (Master's)
I'm a patient, effective tutor with a master's degree in English that can help students with reading, writing, essays, AP English, and writing/reading portions of the PSAT, SAT or ACT. I'm a UCLA alumna and graduated with two degrees in environmental studies and social psychology before attending graduate school in English at St. Mary's.
I have previously tutored 6-12th graders and college students in writing, reading, and English composition. I have also taught writing, reading, and composition at several colleges and universities in the area, including St. Mary's College and Holy Names University. I also have worked in college writing centers and received excellent reviews from my students and superiors. I also spent time working with students on college entrance essays, so I feel I can benefit students in this way.
While grammar, spelling, and vocabulary are part of the writing process (and a large part of standardized tests), I try to also help students with study skills and organization, including managing stress and school work.
When tutoring, I assess a student's needs and abilities with a diagnostic assignment and we go from there. Our goal is improvement and heightened achievement. While I will be challenging, I am always patient, kind and try to build a rapport with my student. I typically use a combination of readings, worksheets, free-writing and structured writing, along with more creative methods for students who are visual or kinesthetic learners. All tutoring is tailored to the individual student.
I enjoy one-on-one tutoring and feel I make a huge difference in students' achievement. I also feel that my experience, as a college and university English instructor, prepares secondary students for college life and expectations. For multiple hour lessons, my rates are $45 for the first hour and $35 for the second or third hours.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been certified by WyzAnt in ACT English and have tutored secondary students who are taking the standardized test. My work as an English instructor enables me to explain grammar rules and spot "tricky" questions.
I studied piano for six years, ages 8-14 and performed in concerts and recitals. (I learned both the Yamaha method and classical -- I prefer the classical method.) I can teach the fundamentals of the instrument and can lead students into more intermediate study including concertos and performance. I have a piano in my home and I still play -- my go-to tends to be Beethoven's "Minuet in G".
