English

I have a multiple subject credential with an English supplementary authorization. I have taught English language arts to students from Kindergarten to adult since 1984. I have also worked with my own daughters in writing essays for college classes and work. I have tutored students in English grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and literature.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a California Multiple Subject Credential with an English supplemental authorization and a CLAD certificate. I have taught K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 grades over the years since 1984. I taught for 15 years in San Jose Unified School District.

Phonics

I have taught reading to K-3 grades. I have worked with children learning to read and phonics is one component of that. I have designed lessons focusing on phonics for children and for adults learning to read. To earn my teaching credential I took classes on teaching reading through the use of phonics and other methods. I have taken linguistics classes in both English and Spanish to better understand the components of language including specific issues around teaching phonetically.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills both in a separate class to students in my classes. Some of the topics included organization, time management, note taking, and test taking strategies.

ESL/ESOL

I have a CLAD certificate on my California Multiple Subject credential. I have worked with second language learners in both classroom and individual settings. I taught ESL for a Vietnamese school in San Jose and tutored ESL students at Mt. Hermon conference center in Santa Cruz County. I taught ESL as a bilingual teacher for San Jose Unified School District for 15 years. I also designed and taught an ESL program at a small resource center in Felton.

Macintosh

As a teacher I used Macintosh computers exclusively in my classrooms. I also served as a Magnet grant coordinator for 3 years, training teachers on the use of Macintosh computers and programs, managing school computer labs, installing software, and teaching students. I was accepted as a Christa McAuliffe Fellow and worked with teachers around the country giving workshops and trainings to teachers. I have a Masters Degree in Instructional Technology.

Social Studies

I have a multiple subject teaching credential and have taught social studies to students in K-8 grade. In the early grades social studies begins with the family and progresses to the community and how people live and work together. Third grade social studies usually emphasizes Native American culture in Santa Cruz the Ohlone's are usually studied.
