I have had extraordinary opportunities of teaching for 29 years in both a public and private school settings. I have taught 3rd and 4th grade-level children for over 12 years. I have my Bachelor's of Arts degree in Child Development and a Master's of Arts degree in Reading/Language Arts instruction. I have the background knowledgeable about what Common Core standards are needed for those grade levels. I specialize in Reading/Language Arts and Writing Skills with all grades up to 12th grade. I am also comfortable with teaching adults basic writing skills. I have worked for various tutoring companies which have helped me to connect and teach students in a one-on-one setting. I have worked at an adult school setting as well with students learning English. I enjoy teaching mathematics to elementary school age children with various hands on manipulatives to further their understanding.
I believe that as an educator it is my responsibility to make sure my tutoring sessions are promoting positive learning, rigorously engaged, empowering students to learn, critical thinking, and providing a strong foundation for lifelong learners. The learning should be enjoyable and the students are actively participants and engaged in the learning process. My role as a teacher is to make sure that every student is able to bring their unique ideas, thoughts, and student led questions. The learning environment allows risk taking, sharing of ideas, and respect. The student's learning is fostering critical thinking and developing problem-solving strategies to succeed in life. I believe the teacher is the facilitator/guide for each student and not just a giver of information. As a facilitator, it is my responsibility to generate alternate presentations of the lessons that I feel help illuminate the key points/ideas.
Students enter the tutoring sessions with various layers of knowledge about the subject being taught. I believe students are best served as they actively engage in the learning process for them to be successful. I assess students through rubrics, checklists, portfolios, and oral presentations. I have discovered after many years of teaching my `passion` for teaching and learning, and using what I learn with zeal and empathy connects with students. I am then able to impact learners, ultimately connecting them to sustain balance and fairness. I believe that William B. Yeats an Irish poet described the essence of teaching when he wrote: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." I am committed to providing an environment that ignites in my student an excitement to learn. The student is given access to the environment where the skills and knowledge will eventually be used. Finally, I gauge every student as an individual, eager to gain knowledge and to be successful and have patience in the process. Thank you for your time.
