I am a retired teacher, having taught math in public high schools for 33 years, the last 31 of which were at Alhambra High School in Alhambra, CA. In the 10 years since my retirement, I have substituted at high schools in Alhambra, Monrovia, and Arcadia. In those schools, I have taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. I have also been a tutor for the CAHSEE test for the last 3 years, helping students who have finished their high school credits, but still have not yet passed this test.
I have loved math since I took Algebra I when I was in 9th grade. Math is like a puzzle to me, in which we have certain information and clues at the beginning of the problem, and we need to figure out how to get to the solution using our memory, creativity and logic. Throughout my career I have endeavored to pass this attitude along to my students.
In my classes I take students from what they already know to the new concepts they don't know, using many examples. If one way of explaining a problem doesn't work, I find another way to explain it.
