I am currently an Undergrad at UC Berkeley. I have always been passionate about education, and I love being able to help and teach others. I was homeschooled for years so I am able to both relate to homeschooled students as well as feel fairly confident that if I was able to teach myself these materials, I can teach others as well. In high school, I independently tutored a variety of subjects at the high school and middle school levels. While I have the most experience tutoring math subjects, I have tutored and provided assistance in other subjects (e.g. psychology, US history, English, etc.) I have also tutored students who are either homeschooled or are taking supplementary online courses. Aside from tutoring, I also regularly provided assistance to students in credit recovery courses as a teacher assistant. I can help with both regular "College Prep" courses, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, some Common Core, and various test prep (e.g. AP, SAT, GED).

I pride myself on being able to explain concepts and help students effectively learn material. I fully understand that everyone learns differently, and I work with students to see how I can best help them to succeed. As such, I always welcome feedback from students and parents, and I will try to incorporate it into future lessons. Feedback is a great way to improve the educational experience for current and future students.

I try to be as flexible with scheduling as possible, however I currently require a 36 hour cancellation policy. If a cancellation is made within 36 hours of the lesson, I reserve the right to bill students at half-rate. If the student is tardy to a lesson, I reserve the right to charge students for the time I spend waiting for their arrival. If I have waited for a tardy student for a reasonable length of time (15 to 30 minutes) and the student has not contacted me to indicate that the student will be arriving, I reserve the right to charge the student for the time I have waited and the rest of the lesson as a cancellation.

Students should also be aware that depending on the subject and the students' needs, I might assign supplementary readings, videos, and other homework assignments that are designed to help students master the material. To promote a safe and neutral study environment, I highly encourage that tutoring sessions occur in local public locations such as libraries or community centers.

I look forward to being of service and helping students achieve and surpass their goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have several years of experience tutoring Algebra 1 for High School and Middle School students. Through that time, I have seen many different learning styles, attention levels, and exposure to math concepts. I have worked with students who completed Algebra 1 online, through credit recovery programs, and in a traditional classroom setting. I have tutored both traditional Algebra 1 and in Common Core.

I completed Algebra 1 in Middle School, and then Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus in High School. I received "A's" in all classes. This upcoming fall I will be taking Calculus in college.

Algebra 2

I completed Prealgebra and Algebra 1 in Middle School, and then Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus in High School. I received "A's" in all classes. This upcoming fall I will be taking Calculus in college. I have several years of experience tutoring math for High School and Middle School students. Through that time, I have seen many different learning styles, attention levels, and exposure to math concepts.

American History

I took AP US History in high school and passed the AP Test with a 5. Depending on the student's age and interest, I may assign supplementary readings that are designed to provide background from the period and make the history more memorable and interesting. My goal is to help my students build a solid foundation in American History that they will expand on as they learn and study later in life.

Biology

My background in biology includes High School Biology and College courses within Integrated Biology and Molecular and Cell Biology. To help students learn, remember, and become interested in the material I may use a combination of studies, videos, mnemonics, and miscellaneous assignments. My goal is to not only help them do well in the class, but to also help students see the relevance between the material, life, and the scientific community.

Economics

I took AP Econ (Micro and Macro) in High School and passed the AP Micro exam with a 4 and the AP Macro exam with a 3.

Elementary Math

I have several years of experience tutoring Algebra 1 for High School and Middle School students. Through that time, I have seen many different learning styles, attention levels, and exposure to math concepts. I have worked with students who completed Algebra 1 online, through credit recovery programs, and in a traditional classroom setting. I have tutored both traditional Algebra 1 and in Common Core. While I have spent significantly less time tutoring Math for K-8 students, I have been one of the go-to people in my family to help my younger sibling with homework as we were growing up so I do have some experience working with kids.

I completed Algebra 1 in Middle School, and then Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus in High School. I received "A's" in all classes. This upcoming fall I will be taking Calculus in college.

English

I can help students improve many aspects of their abilities exercised within English classes such as proofreading, syntax, grammar, diction, reading comprehension, summaries, and varied essay types. The methods I use to help the student improve vary based on what they want to focus on.

Geometry

I have several years of experience tutoring math for High School and Middle School students. One of the High School maths I've had some experience tutoring in is geometry. Through that time, I have seen many different learning styles, attention levels, and exposure to math concepts. Since Geometry is unique in its formulas and spatial problems, I may employ different techniques to help the students at various levels learn best including physical manipulation of objects and rote memorization of formulas.

For your information, I completed Prealgebra and Algebra 1 in Middle School, and then Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus in High School. I received "A's" in all classes. This upcoming fall I will be taking Calculus in college.

Government & Politics

I took AP Gov in high school and passed the AP Test with a score of 5. I think all students should at least have a basic knowledge of how our government and politics function in our lives and I would love to help them achieve that basic understanding. Depending on the subject matter, I might assign videos, transcripts, court cases, and other supplementary materials to help the students succeed.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Microsoft Excel for years and have a basic understanding of its uses and functions. I can help students whether they are trying to make a simple table or use it for calculations. I also have some experience using Excel for Business Statistics (graphs, charts, tables, formulas, calculations).

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used Microsoft Power Point for many presentation types over the years and I have utilized many features including animations, soundtracks, pictures, videos, themes, and fonts. I can also give pointers related to what content should be displayed on the slides and the process students should go through to make the decision for themselves.

Microsoft Word

I have used Microsoft Word for years and have plenty of experience utilizing its features including pictures, charts, margins, columns, bullet points, page breaks, markups, citations, equations, and symbols.

Prealgebra

I helped out with Middle School math courses at all levels from time to time over the years as I helped teach/tutor a homeschooling family and sometimes I was the first person to introduce the math topic and other times I was the second or third coming back to reinforce the learning and present it with a different angle. I have several years of experience tutoring math for High School and Middle School students.Through that time, I have seen many different learning styles, attention levels, and exposure to math concepts.

For your information, I completed Prealgebra and Algebra 1 in Middle School, and then Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus in High School. I received "A's" in all classes. This upcoming fall I will be taking Calculus in college.

Precalculus

I have several years of experience tutoring math for High School and Middle School students. Through that time, I have seen many different learning styles, attention levels, and exposure to math concepts.

I completed Prealgebra and Algebra 1 in Middle School, and then Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus in High School. I received "A's" in all classes. This upcoming fall I will be taking Calculus in college.

Psychology

I took AP Psychology in high school and passed the AP test with a 5. During that year, I also helped other students study for exams and review material. Psychology was one of my favorite high school classes and I plan to take more classes in it in college and potentially major in it. I would love to help other students excel in and enjoy psychology through memorable examples that they can visualize and test for themselves.

Public Speaking

I have a lot of experience with public speaking through my participation in Mock Trial, Model United Nations, in-class speeches and debates, etc. This semester, I will be Facilitating (essentially teaching) a DeCal (class for students by the students) at UC Berkeley.

I have gone through the process or gathering material/data, analyzing the data, synthesizing speeches or arguments, and then perfecting delivery and timing. My presentations have ranged from 30 seconds to 10 minutes depending on the situation.

I can help individuals practice their timing, enunciation, and their overall confidence with speaking to a multitude of people. These skills can also benefit people in one-on-one situations and even when they are holding conversations over the telephone.

Reading

I love reading and it has always been a hobby of mine. I know that reading a variety of literature types and sources dramatically improves comprehension. Thus, I will incorporate different readings into my tutoring where applicable. I will also work with students to enhance their reading comprehension skills. If there is a particular skill related to reading that the student wants to develop, feel free to let me know and I will try to design lessons that will make them successful.

Soccer

I have played soccer in general for 14 years. For 10 of those years I played competitively. Between soccer and a related sport, futsal, I have competed and placed regionally, nationally, and internationally. I've had coaches from all over the San Francisco Bay Area and have learned a variety of techniques and drills that I can use to help athletes hone their skills and improve their game.

Spelling

To enhance students' spelling abilities I may combine readings, online activities, games, and tried-and-true methods to remember spelling (e.g. mnemonics, color coding, etc). Vocabulary and spelling are related, although doing well in one does not necessarily mean excelling in the other.

Study Skills

Between homeschooling and public schooling through high school, I always had grades that were some form of an "A". I now attend UC Berkeley. I know how to juggle academics, athletics, and miscellaneous extra curricular activities. I can show students different methods they might employ to stay on top of their material. Methods I may teach include using a timer, reward system, task list, highlighting, Cornell Note-Taking, how and where to seek supplementary materials, and understanding what should ideally be completed before attending classes or meetings with teachers and tutors so that students can learn the most. On the other hand, I can also teach them tricks they might use if they are pressed for time and aren't certain they will be able to devote as much time as they should have for a subject so that they will be able to achieve their personal best within reasonable constraints.

Trigonometry

I have several years of experience tutoring math for High School and Middle School students. Through that time, I have seen many different learning styles, attention levels, and exposure to math concepts.

Trigonometry is very logical and formula based, so I will help students improve their understanding through formula sheets and problems I have created for students to solve that involve the manipulations of the equations into their different forms.

I completed Prealgebra and Algebra 1 in Middle School, and then Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus/Trigonometry in High School. I received "A's" in all classes. This upcoming fall I will be taking Calculus in college.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary and spelling are related, although doing well in one does not necessarily mean excelling in the other. To enhance students' vocabularies I combine readings, online activities, games, and tried-and-true methods of learning to use words. With alterations, I can help students whether they are in Elementary School or in High School studying for the SAT or AP English exams.

World History

I took AP World History in High School and a Medieval European History class (focusing on Franks, Merovingians, Carolingians, etc.) in college. In my prior experiences tutoring High School World History, I have gone over homework and created review quizzes based on key concepts with the depth and breadth of the quizzes varying based on the level of detail the students need/want to know.

Writing

Writing styles and abilities are influenced by reading, so my tutoring tends to incorporate the analysis of readings and their application in the students' own works. If there is a particular writing skill students wish to enhance, please let me know and I will try to create lessons accordingly. I have been involved in everything from the proofreading of classmates' essays, to Copy Editor for the California Legal Studies Journal, to writing poetry and stories for my own enjoyment. I love reading as much as I love writing, and I hope to be able to help students succeed in their endeavors.
