About Albert

I specialize in tutoring middle, elementary and high school students to prepare them for matriculation to the best colleges and universities possible. I have had the experience of teaching at UCLA and have over 7 years of private tutoring experience, working with tutoring companies in addition to test prep companies. I specialize in tutoring math, science (AP Chemistry, AP Biology, anatomy/physiology), and SAT/AP exam preparation (including English and essay writing).

Some students also come to me for private tutoring for the health profession (MCAT, DAT, & OAT) exams, which all emphasize college-level Chemistry & Biology heavily. Last but not least, I have had great success tutoring students in multiple subjects for overall grade improvement, especially at the middle- and high-school levels.

**Note: I currently only accept students on an application basis (depending on availability and other factors). I may not be able to accept more students at a given time.**

MY EDUCATION/CREDENTIALS

I graduated with my degree from UCLA with high honors (Magna Cum Laude) in Physiology. I had a cumulative GPA of 3.838 with 265.5 completed units at graduation and was a 10-time Dean's Honors List Recipient between 2009 and 2013. I also was a member of the UCLA Regents Scholar Society, the Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Societies, and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society.

I have scored at the 98th percentile on the SAT I/II tests and received the highest score of 5 on multiple AP exams (see below for more details) as a high school student, achieving the AP Scholar with Distinction award by the end of my junior year. I have been the recipient of many university merit-based invitational and scholarship honors and awards.

The SAT examinations that I have scored at 98th percentile or higher are as follows: SAT I; SAT II - Math 2; and SAT II - Biology (M). I also took many AP exams during high school, achieving the AP Scholar with Distinction award by the end of my junior year. Some of the exams that I have taken include: AP Physics B (Score = 5); AP Calculus AB (Score = 5); AP Statistics (Score = 5); AP US Government & Politics (Score = 5).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My Personal Message to You ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In today's fast-paced and competitive job market, there is simply too much to lose by not investing now in your child's or your education. If a student is struggling, it makes perfect sense to get him/her the help needed so that the time spent in school is worthwhile. Great grades and great test scores can open doors that may have been previously closed, so students should have every resource available to him/her to help achieve that goal. Don't forget that grades and test scores are significant factors when determining scholarships**, so investing time and effort now can pay off substantially in the future. Finally, let's not forget the most important part in all of this: the student. The confidence that a student regains through effective tutoring can last a lifetime.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch. Every day spent waiting is another class or lecture's worth of material that you might potentially fall behind or another low quiz/test/exam score that will only make it harder to recover from. I have had too many students who could have received the grade(s) they wanted had they contacted me from the beginning.
Sincerely,
Albert K.
Approved subjects are in bold.
Approved subjects
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Biology
Short Version:
I scored over the 98th percentile on both the SAT II Biology (M) exam and AP Biology exams and have a degree in physiology from UCLA.
Long Version:
Biology is one of the subjects that I tutor students on most throughout the year. Many of the students that come to be for help are in Advanced Placement (AP) Biology and are struggling to understand the material and do well on class exams. Other students come to me to get additional preparation to score highly on the SAT Biology and/or AP Biology exams, both of which are valued highly by colleges and universities throughout the application cycle. Having scored over the 98th percentile on both the SAT II Biology (M) exam and AP Biology exams myself, and having tutored students in biology for the MCAT (for medical school), I have very strong command over this subject area and can help improve one's understanding in the area greatly.
Chemistry
Short Version:
Chemistry is one of my top areas of expertise. I rank in the 97th percentile on both the AP Chemistry and SAT II Chemistry exams and have consistently received strong recommendations from those that I tutor.
Long Version:
Throughout my career, I have received the most requests in tutoring for AP & Honors Chemistry out of all the subjects. In fact, I have tutored many students who end up coming from the same school and class. Besides ranking consistently in the top 1-2% of all of my chemistry classes as a student at UCLA (with classes of over 350 students), I have tutored many students in this subject working at private tutoring companies in the Los Angeles area. Chemistry is one of my top areas of expertise. I rank in the 97th percentile on both the AP Chemistry and SAT II Chemistry exams and have consistently received strong recommendations from those that I tutor.
Chinese
I have over 15 years of private Chinese schooling in both the written and spoken Chinese language. I am a native Chinese speaker and have won several awards in Chinese speech and Chinese calligraphy contests.
I have both taken and passed the AP Chinese Language and Literature examination (without having actually taken the AP class!). However, I do have ample experience with what is necessary to do well in the course.
On the fun side, I love Chinese culture and have even publicly showcased my Chinese Yo-Yo abilities in the past in various cultural performances at the Hayward Kai-Feng Chinese School.
Elementary (K-6th)
Having obtained an internship connected to the UCLA School of Public Health and directed by Dr. Todd Franke, I was able to work for 2 quarters as a 5th-grade Fitness & Nutrition Teacher at Stoner Avenue Elementary School in Culver City, CA; thus, I have experience not only in interacting with elementary-level kids but also formulating lesson plans, classroom materials, and working with elementary school educators and staff.
Much of the preparation for being certified to teach came from a Social Welfare 195 class all interns were required to take before they were allowed on the field. There, we learned classroom teaching skills geared towards the elementary grade level; for the final exam, we were then required to provide a demonstration of our teaching abilities in front of the internship coordinators. I received a A (i.e. 4.0) mark for this course.
MCAT
I am extremely well-versed with the MCAT exam content and the MCAT science subject areas of biology, chemistry, and organic chemistry. My preparation consist of a comprehensive review of all topics, and the provision of practice exams and other study materials for time not spent in session. In fact, I was also the workshop leader for medical school and MCAT preparation at the UCLA Career Center for about a year.
Please note that as of 7/1/2014, I no longer offer preparation for the PHYSICS section; this may change in the near future, however.
Organic Chemistry
Short Version:
Organic chemistry is one of my strongest subjects. I have tutored many students in this subject who came to me preparing for the OAT/DAT/MCAT exam.
Long Version:
Organic chemistry is one of my strongest subjects. I have tutored many students in this subject who came to me preparing for the OAT/DAT/MCAT exam. I have also tutored students who were having trouble in their organic chemistry class at their university/community college. I ranked as one of the top 15% of my class in Organic Chemistry at UCLA with Dr. Steven H., receiving a final grade of an A (4.0) in the class. Moreover, I received and A+ in Chem14A, a general chemistry class heavily based on molecular structure, at UCLA with Dr. Lawrence L. (ranked top 2% of the class).
Piano
I have over 10 years of piano lessons (on-and-off) and have formally passed a grade 5 examination for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). I also passed the ABRSM grade 4 examination with distinction and was invited to play a piece at Chabot College in Hayward, CA at the annual California ABRSM recital. I have many years of experience performing on-stage in front of audiences in semi-formal settings.
Study Skills
At UCLA, I had to opportunity to take a specialized course offered by the Education Department (Education 92F) which focuses specifically on study skills and the research behind different internal and external factors that influence undergraduates to succeed in their courses and college in general. Moreover, while tutoring high school and middle school students in math and science subjects, it is very seldom that I do not also teach the study skills necessary to do well on future homework and tests. Lastly, I myself, having graduated UCLA with high honors, have developed a very good foundation in my own study skills and many of my mentees at UCLA in various organizations that I am a part of have thought my sharing of these skills was extremely helpful.
Web Design
I have extensive web design and programming experience, having taken premium classes locally and through online subscription sites. My areas of expertise in particular are: use of the WordPress content management system (CMS), creating, setting up, and designing websites, graphic design (business logos, advertisement videos, animations, banners, etc.), HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, and use of Distributed Version Control systems (e.g. Git & GitHub).
