Single Subject Certified in Math, History, Science, Reading, and Writing.
I have 15 years of teaching experience in grades 5-10.
I also have 15 years of experience in both one on one tutoring and group tutoring.
Background:
I taught in private schools for the entirety of my fifteen year teaching career. I retired from full time teaching at the end of the 2011 school year to start a non-profit organization that sponsors providing excellent educational opportunities to students in Namibia, Africa.. I love working with children and parents to help them accomplish their academic and life goals.
Tutoring Method:
In my experience students learn best when they are in an environment that encourages them in a few areas. First, students must trust the instructor. Whether the instructor is a teacher or a tutor the student must trust the instructor to guide them. I gain the trust of my students by encouraging open communication throughout the tutoring process. I truly believe that there is no such thing as a bad question when asked with the honest pursuit of understanding. Second, students learn best when they are in a fun and exciting learning environment. That is true from the kindergarten student all the way up to the high school senior. It is my job as their tutor to make the material come alive so they will be intrigued. This is where my classroom teaching experience comes in. I use technology to open worlds to students that they might never have imagined during tutoring sessions. Third, there has to be an honest desire within the student to learn.
In my experience, if these three aspects are taken care, the student will achieve success beyond what they thought they were capable of.
Specialization:
Throughout my career, I have specialized in working with students who were struggling due to various reasons or not living up to their potential. If your student is struggling or not living up to his/her potential, please email me so we can discuss how I can help you and your student to achieve the type of success that you would like to see.
