Hello, my name is Sarah and I am a graduate of Tufts University and soon to be law student! I have two years of experience working with students both in a school setting and in a tutoring setting. I have worked with a range of ages, from 5-18 covering a multitude of subjects and am always excited to tutor in these topics.

My areas of of expertise in math range from elementary math to algebra 1 and algebra 2. I also work with students to improve their writing skills by helping with structure, tone, and grammar. Writing is a passion and everyone is capable of writing well crafted and thoughtful essays with the right assistance!

Through my experiences tutoring I've learned what it means to motivate and challenge the students I work with. In addition, I have learned what are reasonable standards and goals to set depending on the age and skill level of the student. In my tutoring sessions I assess each students strengthens and weakness and then structure the following lessons around those topics. This means that, when we work together, each session will be centered on ways to improve your specific skills. I'm upbeat and want to help the people that I work with set and achieve their goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have spent the last three years observing and working in elementary schools. From this work I have re-familiarized myself in elementary subjects that include, but are not limited to: Math, Science, Reading, Spanish, Vocabulary, and English (grammar). When I worked at a school I utilized many methods to help children with their homework that ranged from simple review/rereading to worksheets to practice tests. All of these methods would be very easy to use in tutoring and have been very successful when I have tried them. In addition, in all of these skills I have been tested at a college level and maintained a high GPA throughout.

Elementary Math

This past year I worked in an elementary school and often had to work with grades fifth and below on their math concepts. I have extensive experience explaining particularly confusing topics (negative numbers, multiplying fractions, division etc.) to these age groups, since Math tended to be the most difficult subject.

Study Skills

Throughout out my years in high school and college I learned a variety of study techniques to help me maintain my above average GPA. I have developed a number of strategies ranging from note-cards, to practice tests, to simple review that could easily be taught to someone else.

Swimming

I was a competitive swimmer and water polo player throughout high school. In addition, in college I worked as a lifeguard and gave swim lessons during the summer. I have a lot of experience with very new swimmers working on floating, elementary free stroke, and elementary back stroke. If you're new to swimming it would certainly be possible to help you learn.

Writing

I have spent years developing my own writing style and working to make it clear and expressive. I have extensive experience writing research papers as well as writing responses to readings. In addition, I am an excellent proof reader when it comes to content, and will work diligently with a student to improve their writing.

Sarah is very proactive — Sarah is very patient with my daughter who struggles with math. She has done a great job of being proactive to find the areas that she struggles with and to help her in those areas rather than just helping her with her daily homework. It has taken a lot of stress off of my shoulders. ...
