Academically, I am competent in a wide variety of subjects from creative writing to mathematics. I possess a BA in History, a Master of Social Work degree, and am currently taking pre-doctoral courses in mathematics. My proficiency in both the humanities/social sciences and in math will indubitably be a boon to any student of mine. Although it feels strange to write this, I suppose I have to make a case for myself. Not many people have such a universal interest and education and I will bring this experience and perspective to the learning process.
My career as a tutor commenced as an employee of Pasadena City College. There, I accrued approximately a year as an official tutor for the campus and instructed students in the formation of college essays. This instructional process inherently included review and practice in such subjects as syntax/structure, the form and progression of arguments, and creative/persuasive style. Additionally, I also assisted students with reading comprehension, text analysis, and the process of creative writing. I worked with many ESL students, moreover, and have significant experience here.
Being a writer myself, I especially enjoy participating in a learning process in regards to any of its topics. There is a reason that so many writers are anxious and melancholic; the writing process is ineffable in its hardship. Thus, having a tutor who understands this, and more importantly, that writing is a process, is a sufficient and necessary condition for success.
Furthermore, as stated, I am a student myself. I am working towards a MS degree in Applied Mathematics as part of an ongoing process towards a doctorate in Cognitive Science. Thus far, I have excelled at basic math, elementary and advanced algebras, and geometry and am more than competent to tutor in these subject areas. Again, this is where my renaissance education aids me as a tutor, for I would not only be focused on the monotonous and technical solution of equations. Importantly, I would also focus on the theory and concepts of the math in order to increase student comprehension.
In addition to experience as a tutor, it is important to mention that I possess more than three years of clinical experience as a therapist. Of course, I am not mentioning this because I plan on providing any therapeutic services. Rather, the reason this is important is because it signifies that I come with a professionally honed patience, analytical ability, and empathy. I am friendly too! And I love to laugh. Who said tutoring had to be boring?
The learning process is complex and, often times, the student is burdened by perfectly natural anxiety. Due to my experience and education background I am aptly suited to provide a tutoring process that is tailored to the needs of the student, and which focuses precisely on the presenting obstacles and/or needs.
I look forward to working with you!
