My daughter took Honors Chemistry last year and got an A, but the class was not challenging and my daughter did not feel at the end of the school year that she had learned very much. This year she is taking AP Chemistry and she was falling flat on her face at the beginning of the school year due to the lack of a strong foundation from last year. Sue has been able to fill in the cement between the cracks by being able to explain in a clear, concise, step by step manner the important AP chemistry concepts along with the the complex chemical formulas. My daughter feels that Sue is able to give explanations with the 'why' this occurs and the 'why' it is important. Sue makes chemistry relevant by taking the abstract material and converting it into information that is manageable to digest. Thus, Sue sort of makes her own chemical reactions by allowing the brain to have it's 'aha' moments. Since she is a credentialed teacher, she is able to use different teaching methods to get a concept across. For instance, she used props [marshmallows and toothpicks to depict atoms in a 3D form] which helped my daughter - the visual learner. She even comes with her own bag of goodies [play dough, marshmallows, toothpicks, etc.] ready to bring alive those electrons, orbitals, neutrons, protons and the rest of the chemistry world's prized characters. I would highly recommend Sue - she is worth in her weight in Au [refresher- the chemical name for gold]! My daughter's first semester grade has greatly improved from the D minus average she had back in September with Sue's expert AP Chemistry tutoring.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
