¡Hola!
My name is Laura and I am a native Spanish speaker with experience teaching all levels from beginning conversational to those who are just looking to brush up for a trip. I can help you learn proper pronunciation, expand your vocabulary, improve your grammar, and help prepare you to have a conversation with Spanish speakers in a matter of weeks! I am also fluent in English (and a UCLA graduate) I can fully explain all concepts and ideas in English as well, or provide an immersion experience and teach you only in Spanish!
Here is a recommendation from one of my students:
Excellent tutor. Very experienced, so can anticipate where students will have trouble. Adapts lessons to the needs and interests of the student. Flexible scheduling to accommodate students' scheduling limitations.
-Ben A.
I am very patient and encouraging and especially enjoy working with beginners. I understand how daunting it can be and take pride in making the language accessible to those who are just starting out. Each lesson is customized to your needs and interests, and I use a variety of mediums to keep the lessons fun, interesting, effective, and most importantly- interactive! Lessons are $40 per hour and are typically held in a library or coffee shop. I also offer two hour rates and translation of Spanish documents. Small groups are also available upon request.
Send me an email with any questions or to get started! I have also included at the bottom some frequently asked questions.
¡Hasta pronto!
Laura
Frequently Asked Questions:
- Do you do weekend classes?
I do offer weekend classes, depending on availability. I schedule one month in advance, so once we schedule our time together is reserved. Typically students like to keep a regular time each week so once we find a time that works for you we can keep it.
- Could you tell me your teaching method and schedules?
My teaching method can best be described as student-centered and conversational. Student centered means that the lessons and structure are custom made to your interests and goals. In our first meeting, we will talk about your past experience and where you see yourself in the future- then we will actively create a plan for you to reach those goals! Conversation is the foundation of my lessons- there is only one way to measure what has been learned, and that is to use it. In short, my lessons are focused on and dictated by your learning, not my teaching. This includes both the content and pace of our lessons. I do everything possible to teach you what you want to learn while guiding the lessons based on my experience. If at any time you feel what we are working on isn't beneficial for you, just say so and we will regroup and refocus.
- Also, could you tell me your fee structure, with any specials or discounts available?
Lessons are $40 per hour, I recommend 2 hour lessons for beginners. Allowing for this time gives us the opportunity to work together to identify content, cover it, and then recover it in various contexts without being pressured for time. Because the lessons are completely interactive (no droning lectures here!) students all say the time flies by and they learn more.
- If everything works out logistically, could I come to at least 1 class to try it out and see if it works out without starting a 'teaching cycle'?
Absolutely. As you can probably already tell, I am very enthusiastic about delivering quality instruction that results in quality learning. I am confident if you try my lessons, you will agree, with no gimmicks and no pressure. As you know, learning a language takes a commitment of time, so I schedule one month at a time- once you have decided it is right for you. This allows me to keep my time scheduling and organizing to a minimum and my time teaching effectively to a maximum!
- Could you tell me where you're located?
I typically meet with my students in a local cafe, or some prefer to schedule a location of their choice.
I hope these answers help- learning a language is exciting and I look forward to working with you to reach your goals!
