English tutor with background in Graphic Design/Journalism

I want to introduce myself as a graduate in the Arts from Cal State Long Beach and as a
credential graduate from San Francisco State University in Art Education. I conducted my student teaching at Albany High School, while my wife attended University of California, Berkeley. While studying for my Art Credential, I also studied Journalism as a minor. I have passed the CSET and obtained a Supplementary Credential in English and I taught high school English at Oakland Emiliano Zapata Street Academy last year. Prior to last year's position, I worked at two schools as a short-term, English teacher for a district in the Palm Springs area (Desert Sands Unified).
I also taught CAHSEE (CA High School Exit Exam) at Palm Desert High School (Palm Desert, CA). I have tutored high school students in afternoon English enrichment classes at Oakland Street Academy. When tutoring, I assess the student's strengths and needs and set up a personalized plan to tackle the issues that we need to address. Together with parents, we formulate structured tutoring sessions, homework, reviews and assessments in order to measure our progress.

Microsoft Excel

I took college courses years ago, but still remember it and there haven't been many changes to this program over the years.

I have taken a college course and use this program all of the time. I used for teaching high school English.

Writing

I was a Photojournalism Major in junior college and I have always had a talent for writing. I have had a couple articles published in Southern California, local newspapers regarding social issues with at-risk youth.

English

I taught high school English for the past couple of years, but now I am unemployed. I mainly taught 9th/10th graders and also junior high level; also high school CAHSEE (CA High School Exit Exam) preparation.

Adobe Photoshop

I have taken computer graphic courses in college and utilized them in my screenprinting business. I have older versions of Adobe and Macromedia (Fireworks). I am currently learning HTML (raw code for websites) and I am incorporating my graphics knowledge into my HTML.

SAT Writing

I know about SAT prep from schools that I have taught in and because my daughter recently took the test.

Adobe Illustrator

I have taken college courses in the past, but I do not own new versions of Illustrator. I have been around this program for years in the sign industry and screen-printing industry, in which I ran my own business.

Soccer

My wife and I have coached youth soccer for approximately eight years for AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) and ABSC (Albany Berkeley Soccer Club), both of which required training and testing to coach. I was also a certified referee for AYSO. I am NFHS certified (National Federation of State High School Associations) and CPR certified. I have also played in several adult leagues over the years.

Football

I played football for my high school as well as flag football for several years at my local Boys and Girls Club of America.

Basketball

I played basketball as a youth for the Boys and Girls Club of America. I also played in an adult league.

Baseball

I recently coached my son's T-ball team for two years, and I have coached my daughters in softball as well. As a youth, I also played approximately 10 years of Little League.

Bodybuilding

I took numerous bodybuilding classes in high school and college. I played football in high school and learned many bodybuilding techniques. I also volunteered at the Palm Springs Boxing Gym under a professional boxer and his bodybuilding father, and they taught me many proper bodybuilding skills.

Tennis

I took a semester of tennis at Long Beach State. While I haven't played in an organized tennis league, my grandmother, who competed in the Senior Olympics in Las Vegas, taught me a great deal.

Softball

I coached my daughters' softball team and also coached Little League baseball for my son.

Drawing

I have a BA in Art/Graphics from Cal State Long Beach, and I taught high school painting/drawing for one year at Oakland Emiliano Zapata Street Academy. I am able to submit a digital portfolio upon request. I continue to draw in my spare time.

Photography

My minor in college (Long Beach State and San Francisco State) was photojournalism, and I took traditional photography (dark room developing) and digital photography classes in college and high school.

Painting

I have a BA in Art/Graphics from Cal State Long Beach, and I taught high school painting/drawing for one year at Oakland Emiliano Zapata Street Academy.
