I was a classroom volunteer for 20 years, helping elementary school children improve their reading skills in both the general ed. and resource programs. I also have 6 years of experience as a substitute teacher (emergency credential), am currently a volunteer adult literacy tutor, tutored SES students in reading, phonics, and vocabulary last spring, and volunteered as an ESL tutor for immigrants from the FSU.
Reading is my favorite free-time activity, and I am very enthusiastic about helping others to love, or at least feel competent with, books! I help students reach their reading goals through exercises and games that reinforce their understanding of phonics, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
I have 20 years of experience working with elementary school students, including 6 years as a substitute teacher. I assisted the classroom teacher primarily with English Language Arts, but also worked with individual students who needed extra help in other subjects such as social studies, science, and, in the lower grades, arithmetic. Some of my substitute teaching was in Resource or Special Ed. classes, where I learned some alternate methods of teaching reading skills and used manipulatives to teach math. I also assisted a 4th grade teacher by running hands-on science projects for the class.
I have had experience as a volunteer tutor working with K-2nd grade students on reading skills, which included learning phonics. And I recently worked as an SES tutor with a Spanish-speaking kindergarten boy in learning the English sounds of the alphabet. In both of these settings, the use of games such as Memory, finding pictures of words containing the sound being worked on, and Go Fish helped reinforce the information for the student. Once the sounds are mastered, moving on to C-V-C words helps the student know that s/he's becoming a reader!
I would rather read than do almost anything else with my free time, and have spent a lot of time in my adult life helping others to acquire the skills necessary to read well themselves. For 20 years I worked as an elementary classroom volunteer, primarily working with kids who were struggling readers. I also was a substitute teacher for 6 years, recently worked as an SES (Supplemental Educational Services) tutor in English Language Arts, and volunteer as an adult literacy tutor in Reading and Writing.
