I began honing my tutoring skills volunteering with an adult literacy program. From there I graduated to working with students in an Oakland elementary school, helping second and third grade students on a one-on-one basis. My most recent accomplishment was working as an independent contractor that had contracted with various school districts in California to accomplish some of the goals of "No Child Left Behind."
During this opportunity I had the chance to quantify my work through the pre-test and post-test administered to the students. Within the one month when I worked with my students, they exceeded their post-test scores increasing them from 17% to 25%.
This was accomplished through utilizing worksheets, online interactive programs and short videos that showcased various topics to assist students in understanding the concepts of language arts.
Most importantly, I found my students really needed to believe in themselves. Tutoring is not only comprised of teaching students the targeted subject but also reinforcing their own giftedness. I refused to allow students to tell me they didn't know something. Instead my strategy asks them to respond with "I want to know, I want to learn, I want to understand." Repeating this mantra really empowered the students and I could see the results in their work and their increased attention to learning. Most importantly they came to believe and trust in their own knowledge.
As an adult I returned to college to complete my education. A recent graduate with a 3.34 GPA and having made the Dean's List, I earned all As and Bs during my second foray into higher education and graduated with honors in my major. Learning has always been paramount in my life. The stimulating environment of school opened the gifts I always had and provided me with opportunities to invest in volunteer tutoring.
I completed my studies at Holy Names University, Oakland, California with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies May 2012 Cumulative GPA 3.65 and made the Dean's List. Enrolled in Theta Alpha Kappa Honor Society, the only national honor society dedicated to recognizing academic excellence in baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate students and in scholars in the fields of Religious Studies and Theology.
Eligible students must have a 3.5 GPA in Religious Studies and/or Theology and a 3.0 GPA overall.
