I have been teaching mathematics at the middle school level for the last 27 years.
Algebra and geometry have been the 2 subjects I taught the most often in my career as a math teacher.
Before becoming a math teacher in Middle School I was an elementary school teacher and used to teach "elementary math" to my students.
I am from France. I was a teacher at the Elementary level for 5 years. I used to teach the intricacies of the french language: grammar, conjugation (the darn subjunctive...), vocabulary and punctuation.
I have been teaching in French here in California for the last 20 years, so I did not lose my French.
For the last 13 years, I have been a member of the technology team at the school where I worked. I used to troubleshoot computers, update systems, fixed hardware and software issues.
I have been teaching Geometry in a french setting for many years. I am accustomed to the principle of a deductive proof.
Working with the french math curriculum here in the states in a bilingual school let me teach all the requisites of the GRE over many years.
I have been the Webmaster at my school and our server was on a remote Linux Box. In order to configure user's access and files configuration, I used many of the Linux commands to deal with off-site issues.
For example: ls to see the listing of files, cd to change dir, top to check on the CPU and memory, nmap to check on the machines in our network, ping to see the packets' loss, traceroute to see the path to see the server, ifconfig to find out about connectivity, scp and ssh to send files and connect, chmod and chown for permissions and access, find and locate for files, cp and mv for duplicating and moving files, apt-get and apt-cache for programs, update and upgrade for systems, etc.
At the middle school where I used to teach, each student had a Mac laptop and I have been a member of the technology team who fixed the computers when issues arose.
I fixed either hardware issues like swapping hard drives, adding RAM, changing keys, or changing screens, or software issues like configuring and installing software, knowing to fix plist problems or dealing with the kernel panic syndrome.
As a computer teacher, I used to use the Microsoft products before switching to Open source software. I taught many classes with Excel involving investments, using formulas, graphs.
Teaching at the elementary school level for a few years, then at the middle school level for a longer time help me to understand where the students were in their issues with math.
One of the requisites of the French system curriculum in middle school in 8th grade is Trigonometry. I taught it for 20 years.
