Hello Potential Students and Parents,
My name is Amanda P., and I am currently a senior at the University of Arizona studying Environmental Science and Creative Writing. My teaching and tutoring experience includes teaching martial arts children's classes, family classes, and adult classes from beginning to advance levels for over three years and tutoring for the Strategic Alternative Techniques Learning Center at U of A more recently.
As a tutor, some of my priorities for a student include not only learning the material we will be studying, but also understanding that information. I've seen a lot of students who memorize the information, but when it comes time to apply it, they don't know where to start. I consider it my responsibility to teach students how to study and how to learn conceptually. This will make it easier for them to learn new information and connect it to things they already know.
Another one of my priorities is making sure students learn how to motivate themselves. At any level of learning, it is crucial to engage with the material and to find a way to motivate yourself. My goal is to empower students with tools that can help them do this. I try to encourage this kind of thinking by asking them why the information is important and how they might use this in the future. Instead of giving the answers, I encourage students to ask detailed questions and to give practice problems a try before jumping to the conclusion of "I don't get it."
Most of all, I believe in a growth mindset. I don't believe that anyone has a set level of "smart." I believe that hard work and practice is the key to success. I will never reward or praise a student for good results that didn't come from hard work. I encourage and praise effort above all things, in order to demonstrate that work and practice will always breed positive results.
