Hello Potential Students and Parents,
My name is Amanda P., and I am currently a senior at the University of Arizona studying Environmental Science and Creative Writing. My teaching and tutoring experience includes teaching martial arts children's classes, family classes, and adult classes from beginning to advance levels for over three years and tutoring for the Strategic Alternative Techniques Learning Center at U of A more recently.
As a tutor, some of my priorities for a student include not only learning the material we will be studying, but also understanding that information. I've seen a lot of students who memorize the information, but when it comes time to apply it, they don't know where to start. I consider it my responsibility to teach students how to study and how to learn conceptually. This will make it easier for them to learn new information and connect it to things they already know.
Another one of my priorities is making sure students learn how to motivate themselves. At any level of learning, it is crucial to engage with the material and to find a way to motivate yourself. My goal is to empower students with tools that can help them do this. I try to encourage this kind of thinking by asking them why the information is important and how they might use this in the future. Instead of giving the answers, I encourage students to ask detailed questions and to give practice problems a try before jumping to the conclusion of "I don't get it."
Most of all, I believe in a growth mindset. I don't believe that anyone has a set level of "smart." I believe that hard work and practice is the key to success. I will never reward or praise a student for good results that didn't come from hard work. I encourage and praise effort above all things, in order to demonstrate that work and practice will always breed positive results.
I have taken three years of biology, one year of high school bio and two semesters of college. As an Environmental Science major, much of the knowledge I learned in these courses was built upon through more ecologically focused classes, such as Hydrology, Water Chemistry, and Soils sciences. I have also worked in a Soils Lab at the UofA, giving me some hands on experience with some of the subject areas.
I have taken four years worth of chemistry, including two years of high school chemistry, and two years of college chemistry. My college experience with chemistry involved 2 semesters of basic chemistry, 1 semester of organic chemistry, and 1 semester of water chemistry. Because of my experience with the subject area, I feel confident in my ability to help students with varying levels of chemistry and its application to other subjects.
I am currently a singer-songwriter, pursuing a future in music. I not only have experience with songwriting, but also in recording and producing. My main instruments for songwriting are the ukulele and guitar. I have been playing and writing songs for over seven years, and it has become a great passion of mine.
From my private tutoring experiences and from my own experiences as a student, I have developed a set of study habits that have not only resulted in good grades, but more importantly, in the retainment of information and a passion for learning. I wholeheartedly believe in the importance of good study habits and their ability to transform the way a student learns. By teaching a student how to study, I can empower them with habits that promote a successful and engaged learning process.
Great Tutor — My son feels Amanda explains the math problems very well, in fact, better than his own teacher. and he is doing much better in Math Class. He also thinks she is very patient, and that she likes teaching. Amanda has told me she actually would like to become a teacher, and I think she will make a very good one. ...
