From the time I was a teenager, I loved working with children. Upon graduating high school, I began the journey of a life time by pursuing a career in education. This journey has taken me through teaching at preschools, running my own home day care, substitute teaching, teaching in the public school arena both in the classroom and virtually, and now embarking on tutoring in reading and math for students that need an extra boost.
I have earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary/Special Education with endorsements in Learning Disabilities and Emotional Handicaps through Northern Arizona University, a Master's Degree in Reading Instruction and Curriculum through Grand Canyon University, and fulfilled the SEI Requirements for all teachers through Pima Community College. Most recently, I have taken a course through Pima Community College to add Cross Category Special Education Certification to my teaching certificate. Additionally, I have taken a few courses through Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University, and University of Arizona towards earning a certification in autism spectrum disorders. I am confident that my education and experience has prepared me to ensure that students achieve mastery of learning objectives. Managing classrooms, homeschooling, running a home day care, teaching at preschool programs and summer camps validates my organizational skills and teaching abilities.
I have worked as a Special Education Teacher/Case Manager at both Arizona Virtual Academy and Arizona Connections Academy (both virtual public schools). I worked closely with students and their parents providing educational support and special education services necessary for my students to have a successful experience learning within the virtual school environment. My students had autism, mild mental retardation, emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, or a combination of the various disabilities. I created interactive whiteboard materials that enabled my students to learn through a visual and hands-on approach throughout our small group and one-on-one live online class sessions. Additionally, on an as needed basis, I modified curriculum or provided alternative remediated materials for individual students to increase their potential to gain access to and succeed within the curriculum.
I have been fortunate to also have the opportunity to work along side the teachers at Arizona Virtual Academy while I pursued homeschooling my own son and daughters, and have come to understand the importance of overall diversity and individual characteristics required to teach and work with students and parents.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, swimming, hiking, reading, decorating cakes, and working on jigsaw puzzles.
