Adobe Photoshop

I teach students about Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and Lightroom from a photojournalism and web design standpoint.

I use my darkroom background to use these Photoshop tools as I once did in a conventional silver-based darkroom to make the best prints possible.

I use my digital photography and archiving background to use these tools to manage a full digital photography workflow, including color management, screen calibration, printing, and photo retouching.

Patience is a key for my work with students. There are multiple avenues to learning a concept, and I'll try as many as it takes to help a student "get it".

Macintosh

I have been working in the Macintosh OS since its early days - I bought a MacPlus in 1988. I currently use as many as five Macs for multimedia, network file sharing, photography and research purposes.

Training users about tips, tricks and the why as well as the how of using a Mac has been a big part of my 30-year career as a newspaper photographers, photo editor and photo systems work.

I am familiar with networking setups, photo workflow, OS troubleshooting and hardware issues.

Patience is a key element of how I work with the people I teach. There are many different paths to understanding, and I try as many as I can in order to help a student "get it".

Photography

My basic philosophy of teaching photographers is to help them understand how to make images that communicate not only what a subject looks like, but what it FEELS like.

The standard photographic tools of composition, exposure, light, color and moment are the means by which a photographer expresses his or her inner feelings. Mastery of these tools facilitates that expression.

Digital photography is changing the visual conversation in our culture. I have been working in the digital realm since 1991, and have expertise in technology and workflow.

Patience is a key for my work with students. There are multiple avenues to learning a concept, and I'll try as many as it takes to help a student "get it".

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
