I think learning should be something we engage in because we enjoy it, not just because it's necessary. Based on that idea, I teach and encourage my students in such a way that they enjoy learning, too. My students have told me that I am tough, but fair. They have also said I am funny, yet someone they can come to with a problem and know they'll get help. I respect my students, no matter what their age.

As the Executive Director of a literacy program for more than 15 years...
I designed and implemented a tutor training curriculum;
I regularly assisted the tutors with their students;
I created individualized learning plans based on assessment results and individual goals for hundreds of adult and young adult students.
I personally tutored students from all over the world, helping them learn how to read, write, do math, understand computer basics, and improve their English Language skills.

As an individual...
I am the mother of 2 (+3 others) and grandmother of 11..really!;
I love to read and write, and draw;
I enjoy music, cooking for my friends and family, and gardening;
And lastly, I love meeting new people and learning new things.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a literacy instructor and previous literacy program director, I am aware of what the current research shows and which methods and techniques are being used for teaching...children and adults, English speaking and non-English speaking. I am familiar with and have used this information in my teaching. Knowing that K-6 education is succinctly described as learning to read (K-2grade) and reading to learn (3-6grade), and that students need to be active participants in their own learning activities, I have spent many years using a student-centered approach to addressing individual needs and goals.

ESL/ESOL

I completed the TESOL Certification courses at the University of Hawaii, Hilo in 2005 at the top of my class.
Additionally, As the Executive Director of a literacy program:
I designed and implemented a tutor training curriculum which included ESL/ESOL content;
I regularly assisted the tutors in our program with their students;
I created individualized learning plans based on assessment results and individual student goals for hundreds of adult and young adult students.
I have personally helped students from all over the world learn how to read, write, do math, understand computer basics, and improve their English Language skills.

Phonics

As the Executive Director of an adult literacy program in Hawaii, I helped many adults and young adults improve their reading, writing, and language skills. I also trained other tutors to work with the students.

Phonics and vocabulary development are the basis of all the reading instruction I do personally, and the training I did for the tutors who worked for me in Hawaii. I know the concepts. I have the materials. I believe phonics are crucial to building reading skills.

Reading

As the Executive Director of an adult literacy program in Hawaii, I helped many adults and young adults improve their reading, writing, and language skills. I also trained other tutors to work with our students.

Study Skills

As the Executive Director of an adult learning center, I assessed hundreds of students and created curriculum / study plans for them based on their test scores, learning styles, and schedules. I also taught home school for two high school students.
