I am an undergraduate student at Arizona State University and Barrett the Honors College, and am expecting to graduate in May 2013. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Global Studies, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish linguistics, and a certificate of Spanish-English translation.
My ultimate goal is to work as a legal advocate on behalf of a marginalized community, either in the United States or abroad. I would like to work with a non-profit organization or a government body to achieve this goal. More imminent objectives include serving in the Peace Corps or Teach for America, and attending law school.
My time as a tutor at the Arizona State University writing center has helped me to hone my own writing skills, as well as practice critical instruction and peer-to-peer education.
I have had extensive experience with both paid work and unpaid internships during my undergraduate career. From August 2010 to the present, I have worked as a writing tutor at the Arizona State University Writing Center. Here, I provide individualized writing tutorials, patiently explaining writing methods and guidelines to students while empowering them to take control of their own communication skills. I am certified by the College Reading and Learning Association, and undergo training sessions at the start of each semester.
I am also currently working on campus as a House Manager for Galvin Playhouse and other on-campus venues. In this position, I facilitate theatrical and musical performances on the ASU campus, greet and seat audience members, and utilize customer service skills to enhance patrons' experiences. I am also in charge of 1-6 ushers, and must direct and oversee them.
This past summer, I served as the Partners Program Intern at the Human Rights Campaign national headquarters in Washington, D.C. In this internship, I acted as the face of the Partners program (sustained donor program) for the organization, addressing donor concerns and fundraising issues. I was also responsible for extensive data entry and customer service work.
During the spring semester of 2011, I interned in the recruitment office of Barrett the Honors College. As a part of the recruitment team, I assisted the two full-time recruiters with data entry through the Recruitment Plus system, streamlined events for prospective students through scheduling and material preparation, and utilized MS Office software and Ricoh Xerox equipment.
From August 2009 to May 2011, I worked in the ASU Music School as a Performance Events Staff member. Here, I prepared the stage and house prior to student and faculty performances, operated light and audio devices, monitored stage equipment, attended weekly meetings, contributed ideas to improve performance procedures, and adapted to last minute changes to performance schedules.
