In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have worked with students middle school through post college for 5+ years on career pathways and using proven methods to determine skills/abilities/talents combined with interests and values to lead students to the correct career choices. I have developed a school year long curriculum working with middle school students to begin to understand these concepts and prepare themselves early to begin reaching/developing and experimenting with their future goals.

College Counseling

I have been working with high school students for five years on college admissions applications and elementary/middle school students on private school admissions applications. I am a former interview for Harvard University admissions.Through my own personal experience, in addition to my college consulting experience, I am very familiar with and confident in assisting students with their college and private school applications.

ESL/ESOL

I have been working with English as a second language learners for more than ten years. I have worked at ESL Schools in Mexico and Arizona and have developed an ESL curriculum. I have also trained and worked as an English instructor with the Berlitz Language Schools.

Public Speaking

I have a bachelors degree in Human Communication, specializing in performance studies. Through my undergraduate education I took intensive and advanced coursework in public speaking. I have worked with students and clients on presentations in a variety of areas including school, work, and community organizations. I work with students to ensure they are comfortable with their presentations. I will assist them with presentation topics, materials, stance, tone of voice, and content amongst many other needs. I enjoy public speaking myself and love to watch others flourish and expand their skills in one of my favorite areas of expertise.

Reading

I have tutored and taught in three different states and am familiar with a wide variety of curricula. I make sure to apply multiple learning theories to assist the students in learning in a way that fits their needs and the requirements/materials of the course. Additionally, when I work with a student, I make sure to consult with them, the family, and the teachers with the parent/student approval to best meet the needs of the student. I typically communicate with the teachers regarding their expectations for the student, their expectations for the class, and the material that is going to be covered in class ahead of time to provide supplemental materials with the students I am working with.

Spanish

I am a former high school Spanish teacher and tutor with 5 years of experience tutoring and teaching Spanish, and 10 years of general teaching experience. I have a bachelors degree in Spanish and have spent extended time living in Mexico. I have also trained with the Berlitz Language Institute. I have a masters in Education and am working on my PhD in Education. I have tutored and taught in three different states and am familiar with a wide variety of curricula. Additionally, when I work with a student I make sure to consult with them, the family, and the teachers with the parent/student approval to best meet the needs of the student. I typically communicate with the teachers regarding their expectations for the student, their expectations for the class, and try to get material that is going to be covered in class ahead of time to provide supplemental materials with the students I am working with.

Study Skills

I have been working with students in the area of study skills for 15 years. I have experience with learning disabilities and special needs such as ADD/ADHD, emotional/behavior disabilities. I use various approaches based on the multiple intelligence theory to assist students in learning the material in the best way for them. I have developed organization tools for students, flash card systems, and various other supplemental online and written material. I work with the student to create an organizational system based on the subject in which they need assistance. I teach students how to prioritize assignments, and arrange their study time and space to be most effective for them.
