Hi. My name is Patti and I have always enjoyed reading, ever since I can remember.
When I was a student at the community college, I enrolled in a class to help "at risk" students in elementary school learn to be better readers. I won an award based on the creativity of how I accomplished the feat, and I got chosen to get "best progress" chart. Not only that, but I raised my tutees reading levels two grade levels.
It didn't stop there, however. I then went on in college, and became a tutor in many other subjects (except math)for the many disabled students who were in danger of being able to graduate. This went on until way after graduation in 2001. Since I was a multi-task tutor, they kept me year after year.
In the spring of 2005, I became a personal tutor for a group of students in a specific instructor's psychology class. It was a "BEACON" tutoring program, set up for students to help the instructor help the students help themselves, and we met 2 days a week, for 2 hours. I had fun, and I learned alot about myself, as well as the other students. All of the tutee's passed the class with "flying colors", and made us all proud. The students said they never would have imagined passing the class if it weren't for me, and the fact that I was patient and cared about them.
I can adapt to help any typeof learning style, because there is no certain way to teach...everyone has their own theory. I use whatever works...period!!!
Phonics is a very important part of learning to read. When reading, putting letters together to form words is the first step.
I taught my daughter how to read by using "Dr. Seuss books,"Green Eggs and Ham", and Sam I Am" were two of our favorites.. Repetition and rhyming are the easiest and best way to get a child, or any one for that matter, interested in reading. Letting the child pick out a favorite book to read is another.
When I first started tutoring, there was a child in the 1st grade who didn't even know what sounds each letter made. I worked with her twice a week, for months, and at the end of the school year, she had advanced 1 grade level for the enunciation, and 2 grade levels for the reading..Her parents and I were so proud of her.
I am registered on the National SMARTKIDS program for not only reading, but phonics too. After all, reading starts with enunciations and sounding out the letters and words. It's Fun with Phonics!!!
Soccer is a great sport!! In fact it is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States.
I have been a coach at the recreational level since 1998, but I only got certified in 19999.
I was introduced to the sport when my daughter was only 4 years old. Although I didn't really understand the concept, I attended every practice, and game, and eventually became knowledgeable and willing to become a coach. I did referee for one Saturday, though.
When I was in my 1st year of college, one of my assignments was to prepare a speech comparing soccer to football, which in itself was a huge task. However, it was feasible, and I proved my point.
In 2001, I actually had my own team, in CA, but it was short-lived because my daughter tried out and made the select team. Although my daughter hasn't played since she was 16, I have been trying unsuccessfully to be a coach again, as I miss the whole comraderie "belonging to a team" thing.
Recently, I got a call from the recreation and park district to see if I am still interested, and what age group I would prefer, so there's still a chance.
