I am available to help take the frustration out of language arts assignments and projects. No need to worry about the work getting done any more!

I am an experienced, 6-12th grade certified (in Florida and Arizona) teacher and freelance writer. I have an undergraduate degree in English (major) and sociology (minor) and a master of education in curriculum and instruction. Currently, I am teaching 8th grade language arts at an A-rated charter school in Surprise. Additionally, I have more than 15 years of experience as a freelance writer and in corporate America.

My specialty is developing writing and critical thinking/analytical skills. I can help students improve their reading comprehension and fluency, writing, and presentation skills. I can also help students complete all language arts papers and projects. This includes providing support for research and citation formatting as well.

I have some excellent strategies to help build long-term performance particularly in writing. I have experience working with students who have IEPs and many students who felt they could not accomplish the work have been able to do so with my help.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have and a consultation about your child's needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a BA in English and an MEd in language arts curriculum and instruction. I am in my third year as a middle school language arts teacher. This includes experience teaching reading, writing, and public speaking.

Literature

I have a BA in English and an MEd in Language Arts curriculum and instruction. I am in my third year as a middle school language arts teacher. This includes experience teaching reading, writing, and public speaking. I have extensive experience reading, analyzing, and discussing literature with secondary Language Arts/English students.

Proofreading

I have worked in corporate America as a technical writer and on my own as a freelancer for more than 15 years. This experiences requires accuracy and an understanding of the nuances of language conventions.

Public Speaking

I have been worked as an instructor in corporate environments and in schools where I have written and delivered speeches, plays, and instruction I have worked in the theater for 20 years and worked as a drama coach. This experience requires extensive public speaking skills. Public speaking tutoring would revolve around improving voice projection and articulation and practicing the use of appropriate (effective) body language.

Reading

I use a whole language learning approach to teaching reading that incorporates phonics as a tool, but not a sole teaching method. Reading focuses on both fluency and comprehension using both discussion and writing.

Vocabulary

I am highly literate and believe that a well-rounded student has a comprehensive vocabulary that is built through word exposure, root word analysis, and decoding using context clues.

Writing

I am an international produced playwright and have made my living as a professional writer before completing my master of education and becoming a certified secondary language arts teacher. I have gained recognition in my professional work for teaching writing strategies that get help students plan and write with great success. My students have demonstrated significant, quantifiable growth under my instruction. In my first year of teaching, I was able to develop low-achieving students from reading and writing at a 3/4th grade level to a 7/8th grade level in one year.
