Thank you for taking the time to review my profile.

My professional experience as a Licensed Professional Engineer provides a wide breadth of technical abilities. My organized approach as an Engineer proved invaluable in graduate school, where I achieved an overall GPA of 4.0 and a master's with distinction.

I also have a TEFL certificate and taught English in Mexico for four years. I concentrate on correct conversational and business English. My students additionally learn correct pronunciation and sentence syntax.

My methodology in teaching is to guide students toward understanding and retention of a concept. I believe there is better retention of the concepts if the student is guided to the answer rather than just being told. That methodology applies to all the subjects I teach, be it English, ESL, MS Software, or the classes in High Schools today.

My primary satisfaction in teaching occurs when I see that my student expresses interest, smiles, and they "get-it." My facilitative skills help students stay engaged in the subject and they are building blocks for retention; while for me it is a source of satisfaction and enjoyment in seeing someone learn.

I look forward to meeting you and the opportunity to enhance your skills.

Donald’s subjects

ACT English

My comprehension of English is substantiated by having a Master's with distinction, obtained by completing all my post graduate classes with a 4.0 GPA.

While teaching English for over four years in Mexico to employees of American owned companies I gained insight into lesson planning. It is my belief that effective lesson plans need to focus on the student's assessments before starting classes.

That applies to students classified as beginners through advanced business levels.

My text for preparing lesson plans is "The Grammar Book, An ESL/EFL Teacher's Course" by Marianne Celce-Murcia.

Computer Science

My qualifications in computer science focus on the academic side (undergraduate degree in Electrical Technology), and more so on the practical and application side of computer uses.

Some examples are: the development of software for production control and inventory management in a food processing facility; tying production equipment together with order entry software to generate order picking for shipment; using bar-coding for tracking of production and inventory control; use of factory floor PLC's for machine automation; and labor management.

My belief regarding teaching English is to focus on the conversational aspects of the language. Specifically how to convey thoughts using the various tenses in English and creating sentences that use prepositions properly for clear communications.

During my four-year tenure as a teacher of English in Mexico I developed several hundred lesson plans that helped students comprehend how to use English in their employment. My students were using the language on a daily basis in communications across the global Hewlett-Packard network of companies.

My experience teaching English as a second language stems from successful student learning for the Guadalajara employees of Hewlett-Packard, Hershey Foods, and several small businesses across four years in Mexico.

My ESL classes have had class sizes from six to one-on-one individual tutoring.

I pride myself on being able to teach correct pronunciation as well as grammar.

As an educated, experienced, and licensed professional engineer with a master's degree I have the knowledge base to help students pass the GED.

I prepare my own lesson plans based on the student's needs. That methodology was used across four years of teaching English in Mexico and continues to be successful also across all my subjects taught as a WyzAnt tutor.

General Computer

I have been in the computer industry as a professional Engineer for over thirty-years.

In teaching EFL/ESL I prepare my own lesson plans based on the student's language assessment made before starting classes.

It is my belief that by utilizing the methodology in Marianne Celce-Murcia's text "The Grammar Book, An ESL/EFL Teacher's course" all my students benefit.

I prepare my "student-specific" lesson plans such that they challenge and motivate students.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using spreadsheets since the introduction of MS Excel. Those spreadsheets involved over a dozen sheets each and were capital budgets for nine factories with Kraft; or single capital budgets for construction projects exceeding $15,000,000 each.

Microsoft PowerPoint

The use of PowerPoint was an essential part of my positions with Kraft as an Engineering Director, as well as while I was a contract ESL teacher in Guadalajara, Mexico to present implementation progress report material to the Hewlett-Packard project managers in the USA while I was in Guadalajara.

Microsoft Project

While I was Engineering Director for Kraft I used MS Project to teach my subordinate project managers the correct submission requirements for schedules in capital projects.

In addition, I used MS Project for the scheduling portion of my capstone paper to install SIP housing in the Caribbean. It was designed and manufactured in Phoenix then shipped to the Caribbean and erected on site.

Altogether I have used MS Project since it's inception and first marketed.

Microsoft Word

I have been using MS Word since it was first introduced. Some examples of significance were capital project requests that were to comply with Kraft's submission standards, review of requests by subordinates while I was Engineering Director, and my Master's degree capstone paper for installation of SIP housing in the Caribbean.

Physical Science

My knowledge of physical science has been used throughout my career as a professional engineer and while obtaining my masters degree. Therefore, I have an ample number of examples to assist a student to learn the subject material.

My proofreading skills were honed in a business environment and an academic one. During some twenty-plus years in positions at major global companies I was responsible for approving capital appropriation requests. This involved thorough review of the request's premise and authorization argument.

While performing graduate course work my papers followed the APA style of writing and I obtained a 4.0 GPA; graduating with distinction. Hence, I feel highly qualified to perform peer reviews for students in the effort of their gaining skill with the APA style.

My belief in teaching English reading has the basic premise of student interest.

When teaching English reading to Spanish speakers in Mexico, it was imperative that the material being used hold the students interest. To that end, I use material that I am certain the student will have some knowledge of so it can spark some conversation to follow. The point being that conveying thought through written material can be retained by conversation that follows -- perhaps even in a debating format.

Study Skills

My study skills teaching experience covers four years of teaching students how to study English, improve math skills, proofread their writing, make presentations, use of MicroSoft programs, and preparation for acceptance exams.

My ability to have organized, efficient study skills of my own enabled me to obtain a Master's degree with distinction.

It would be my pleasure to pass that methodology over to any student who wishes it.

During my tenure in Mexico teaching English as a foreign language to groups of six I also tutored young persons one-on-one who wished to attend colleges in the USA.

My tutored students were particularly challenged considering the ETS TOEFL workbook has a strenuous approach to receptive and productive skills in English at an academic level rather than only a conversational level. In addition I stressed pronunciation at the vowel level using a list of 200 difficult words I had prepared from my ESL classes. That list was focused on decreasing the tendency for a Spanish speaking student to have a deep Spanish accent that pronounced cognates in a Spanish manner.

When completing three months of classes those tutored had improved their English skills to the level capable of being accepted in an American college.

Awesome instructor and very patient! — Don has a way of slowing my mind (and me!) down and explaining what I need to do in simple terms. Then, he "tests" me over and over, to make sure I have grasped the concepts. He doesn't give me the answers, just helps guide me there. And he teaches me computer keyboard shortcuts. I am 46 years old and currently taking an online Intro to Computers class where I am struggling with MS Office Excel - ...
