I am a well organized, hard working educator who loves learning and wants to share that with others. I create individual learning opportunities with my students that are developed based on exactly what the student needs. Once the student and I become acquainted with one another, we collaborate on the creation of an individual learning plan with goals and expectations for both of us. This allows the student to feel that they are actively engaged in the solution and will assist in achieving the desired goal.

I have been in education for 32 years and spent nearly half of that time in school myself as I wanted to continually be on top of the best practices in teaching and learning. My PhD. is in Curriculum and Instruction and I feel that it gave me a broad perspective on what it takes to be a successful learner, teacher and coach.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is a pillar of reading and reading comprehension. The more vocabulary a student knows in a content area, the better they are able to comprehend.

Vocabulary should focus on teaching words that are based on context and meaning. There is research out there to show the link between having an extensive vocabulary and school success.

Grammar

The importance of mastering grammar can only assist students in becoming more proficient in transferring concepts from oral language to written language.

Connecting what the student knows in oral language to written language through writing samples that the student generates provides an opportunity for students to see the relevance of grammar in their own writing.

Reading

Literacy was once known as the ability to read and write. Now it is about being able to make sense and engage in advance reading, writing, listening and speaking.

It is critical to allow students to develop solid skills in reading so that they can be applied across all content areas. The ultimate goal is to create opportunities for students to think, write, read and talk about what they learn.

Writing

Writing skills have become more important that ever before. Written communication through social media, text messaging, e-mail, blogs are all modes of written communication are a part of everyday life. With these new resources at our fingertips, we need to be proficient with our communication skills.

Writing is one the the most important ways of expressing your thoughts and communicating ideas. Writing is a lifelong skill necessary not only for now but for all of our future endeavors...

Becoming proficient in English is very important across all subject areas as content writing is critical as the student advances through school. Learning how to communicate effectively with the English language can help you master reading and writing as well.

Spelling

As technology has become more advanced and we have become more dependent on ensuring our spelling errors are corrected through this technology. We have become complaisant in our efforts spell.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was a teacher for 14 years working with age groups of 5-14 year old students. Creating an atmosphere that is conducive to learning needs to be done regardless if it is one student or a classroom full. I have been working with students for over 30 years and continue to learn more about best practices in education. I have a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction and strive to use what I learned to meet the needs of the students I teach.

Study Skills

As a former teacher and administrator, I always had study skills as part of the curriculum. Teaching students how to organize their thoughts and their time can only enhance their learning both in and out of the classroom.

Teaching them to keep a planner to make sure their time is well spent on what is relevant teaches them a life long skill. Time management is essential in improving academics.
