I am a retired Special Education teacher with 19 years experience wanting to tutor your child. I have taught Learning Disabled students, several with mild Autism, ADD, OCD, students who are blind, those with Speech Impediments, and Language Delayed. I have also taught K-2 for a couple of years. I am an experienced teacher who individualizes all lessons to fit the needs of each student. My strengths are in reading comprehension, grammar, phonics, and writing skills. I am very patient and dependable. Many children in my classes have progressed in their skills to be able to exit Special Education. My goal is to be able to make a difference in your child's self confidence and learning abilities.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught students in a Resource Class with ADD/ADHD both in small groups and individually. Behavior Modification or Applied Behavior Analysis has been helpful in working with these students. As a Resource Teacher, I have found many learning strategies useful for the educational progress of the ADD/ADHD student.

Dyslexia

As a Resource Teacher I have worked with many students who have had Dyslexia and Dysgraphia. Reversal of letters and numbers can be very challenging for the student. Learning strategies can compensate for these challenges and providing a strong phonics foundation is essential in reading.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught elementary school for 20 years. My speciality has been in learning difficulties. For 15 of those years I taught children K-8 in a variety of subjects including reading, phonics, language arts, science, social studies, spelling, math and even PE. I feel students improve in their studies best when their learning strengths are emphasized. I enjoy working with students one on one and found students benefit greatly with individualized instruction.

Handwriting

I have taught printing skills to students in K, 1st, and 2nd grades. I have also taught handwriting skills to a special needs student in 6th grade using a program called "Handwriting without Tears". Through careful direction and adequate practice Handwriting skills will improve!

Special Needs

I worked with Special Education students for 19 years in Northern California in a Public School grades K-8. My students included Learning Handicapped, ADHD, Aspergers, Language Disordered, and Mildly Mentally Retarded. My experience working with Special Needs students has been a very rewarding part of my life.

Study Skills

As a K-8 Special Educator I helped many students with Study Skills. Studying for exams can be very difficult for students. I am able to help students with memory techniques, and organizational skills to make test taking easier. Outlining and note taking skills make writing essays much easier for students. Improved Study Skills make education much easier and removes test anxiety.
