I specialize in helping students that struggle with reading and writing. It can be students in junior high or high school that need extra support in these areas to complete their current grade or help high school students prepare for AIMS in reading and writing. I have been teaching social studies for 18 years and have taught reading and writing intervention classes for the last five years. I taught a reading/writing intervention class as recently as this summer which focused on working with students to improve their reading comprehension and fluency skills. The class also assisted students in becoming more creative writers by having students create descriptive journals on various subjects that made them think about their past, present, and future.
I am able to tutor one-on-one with students or in a small group setting of 3-7 students. I have used the Reader's Theater series which uses fluency levels in plays to help students with their fluency and comprehension. I have also used Junior Scholastic articles extensively for reading practice and discussion.
I believe all children need to learn to read and write effectively and in particular, these skills are necessary to graduate from high school in Arizona and I relish the opportunity to help students in these academic areas.
