English tutor with teaching and test-prep writing experience!

Greetings! I have been an instructor at the college level since 1990, teaching English as a foreign language abroad, English as a second language in the U.S., and various other English courses, plus tutoring students in high school and college prep. For nearly 10 years, I wrote English/Language Arts test-preparation materials for national and various state exams (grades 1 through college prep), culminating in a position as head of the ELA curriculum department at American Book Company. I have served as adjunct faculty at Chattahoochee Technical College and as a presenter and instructor at Emory University and for the Senior Summer School program. I thoroughly enjoy helping students to grasp concepts that will help them succeed in all future learning!

Vocabulary

Vocabulary comprises the building blocks of language. A rich lexicon enhances expression. I help students to appreciate the diversity of words and learn how to increase their vocabulary in order to communicate more effectively and creatively.

Grammar

Following the rules of a language allows us to use it well to communicate meaning. I thoroughly enjoy teaching the details of grammar. Especially important is pointing out to students how and why a rule is needed. My ultimate goal is always to help students be understood so that they can succeed.

Reading

Reading truly is fundamental! Being well read across a variety of genres and subject areas is the key to both knowledge and language acquisition. My aim is to help students develop an appreciation for all they can gain through reading.

Writing

Expressing ourselves in writing is an important life skill. As both a teacher and experienced writer, I help students to understand how to use writing in compelling ways. Effective writing skills translate to success in many subjects!

English

The English language in all its intricacy has been a passion of mine for many years! In addition to writing, editing, and proofreading throughout my career, I have been an English teacher on and off since 1990. I enjoy immensely helping students to better understand English language concepts.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a master's in teaching English as a second language from Arizona State University. I have taught English abroad as a foreign language and domestically as a second language. In addition, I have tutored English-language learners in advanced concepts.

Literature

Quality literature expands our horizons and helps us feel empathy for people we might never meet in real life. It helps us learn lessons that our own life experiences might not bring readily. My aim is to help students understand a variety of messages in literature and develop ways of analyzing what they read to gain the most knowledge and insight from it.

Proofreading

Being able to find and correct errors in writing helps a student to succeed in communicating well. By teaching the rules of grammar and the nuances of vocabulary, I help students to learn proofreading. This important skill helps them to turn in more polished writing and succeed on English tests.

SAT Reading

As of the author of a test-preparation guide for the SAT Reading, I am highly qualified to help students prepare. Not only do I understand how texts and questions are included in the test, but I also can help students with more basic reading skills to get up to speed and succeed.

SAT Writing

I am the author of a test-preparation guide for students taking the SAT Writing test. Being very familiar with the testing format, I can help test-takers to prepare and succeed.

ACT Reading

I am the author of a test-preparation book for the ACT Reading exam. Being very familiar with the way the test is given and how students can best answer questions to succeed, I can expertly guide those preparing for the ACT.

ACT English

I am the author of a test-taking guide for succeeding on the ACT Reading test. Understanding the formal and goals of the test, I am able to expertly assist students to prepare. I have helped many student ace the ACT!

Public Speaking

From high school onward, I have been honing my speaking skills. Back then, I participated on a winning forensics team that twice won honors at the state level.
