Many people have come to the U.S. from other countries. I know there is a need to be able to communicate better. I earned a certificate in teaching English as a Second Language at the University of California, La Jolla while I was teaching computer software skills in the hotel industry. Although I had been a teacher in the public schools, I worked for sixteen years training hotel staff on computer skills.

Later, I went to Armenia and then Switzerland working in both locations with students wanting to learn English. I have worked with people who are just beginning to speak English, and more often with people concentrating on accent, writing, or grammar skills.

The students I tutor will find that I am able to go at their pace, that I explain things in several ways, and plan and revise lessons to fit their existing schedules and specific needs. I work with male and female students at any age, and concentrate mainly on English as a Second Language students.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

My degree in Education provided certification for teaching all subjects in the elementary school, grades 1-8. My majors were art and social studies. While working at an International School in Switzerland, I was responsible for tutoring grades 5-8. Basic math, pre-algebra, geometry, reading in science and history, and spelling were the subjects that required the most help. I am also certified in Teaching English as a Second Language. I have taught at the 4th grade level and worked with freshman high school students on study skills. I try to make the subject matter relevant to the student while seeking to instill motivation towards improvement in the particular subject. I have a Masters Degree in Counseling and worked in a school setting as a counselor for ten years. Self esteem issues can be a road block for success in school, as well as study skills, and certainly motivation. Students find that I try to make the road to improvement a friendly one.

ESL/ESOL

Teaching English as a foreign language often involves working with individuals who speak some English already, but have difficulty with everyday American English usage. Speed, accent, clarity, pronunciation, slang, and subtleties in meaning vary in speakers, making comprehension difficult for second language learners. Working with such an individual requires extensive practice in every day speech utilizing personalized life circumstances. It also involves word study to search out different meanings in different circumstances, and different meanings for same sounding words.

Study Skills

Study skills was an area I brought into the high school classroom while I was a counselor in a high school for 10 years. In working with teachers, time was allocated in the classroom for the counseling staff to present ways of improving grades by simply improving the way they took notes, took tests, and organized themselves.

Besides 12 years in the educational field, I have worked in corporations where organizational skills were quite helpful. My work in providing students study skills actually helped in a business setting also.
